Saving Excel/Word files to server after updates

After the automatic update installed, I cannot save new filenames back to my
file server for Word/Excel files. Old filenames retrieved from server will
save edited changes, but only under the old filename. It looks like from the
other comments posted this is a mild issue compared to some the trauma out
there.

"james",

While the Windows Update appears to be working correctly, the content of the
update might not be. Let me ask this: Can you, from this same affected
machine, save files OTHER than Word and Excel to the file server under new
filenames?

What is the operating system on the "client" computer that was installing an
automatic update?
Windows XP?
Windows 2000?
Windows Server 2003

If one of the above, which service pack?
Which automatic update did you install? Was it more than one? You can look
this up through the Windows Update website, by clicking on the link: "View
installation history" They are listed in reverse-chronological order.
Are you in a corporate network, or is this your home network that has the
affected box and file server?
If in a corporate network, is it possible that your permissions were changed
at all within the network? This could have been done at a local group
level, which would mean that your particular UserID was part of a group that
was moved.

Please reply back to the following newsgroups:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I am having the same problem since the update. I've found that uninstalling
the KB885250 update resolves the problem. I'm still trying to find out why.
If you find out anything, please let me know.

MS have at last acknowledged some of the problems with this hotfix.
Go to

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895900/

for another patch to fix the problem - if their comments apply. Sounds like
a new hotfix is on the way from Win Update
