But when i use word (xp) and save it to my doc's it turns into word pad and
has a lot of different symbols before the actual letter what i have written.
How do i get to open in word (xp) i have tryed the open with bit but can
find word in the list or the browse bit.
I do have all the updates for the office xp.
Please keep it simple Thank you Niall

If I was you, I would unistall Microsoft Works.
Also, you must be saving the incorrect file extension.
Check to see what is the default program.

It sounds to me like associations have been screwed up.

Right-Click on any "Word Pad" document that you want to open in word,
then select "Open With". In the list that appears, choose Word. If you
always want to open those files in word, you may need to check the
"Always use this program" box.

Open Contol Panel, then search for "Default Programs". You can then from
there change the default associations for your files.

If the program you want to use is not on the list, then you must click
-Browse- and then locate the exe for it.

The executable for MS Word is winword.exe. Search for it.
