Says Not Connected to .NET Messenger

Ok, here's the problem. I had a working Instant Messenger the I was
instructed to upgrade to 8.1 so I did. Now all of a sudden I do not have it
and can not even sign in to 8.1. I was told unstall that and install 7.0. Did
that still cant sign in. When I bring up MSN Messenger and go under options
under connection it tells me I am currently NOT connected to .NET Messenger
Service. Why not and is this the problem. Since I was able to use Messenger
before the upgrade why am I now NOT connected to .NET Messenger Service.
Again is this why I cannot sign in and if so then what do I do to fix it so I
can use Messenger before I go and buy a Mac

I really need some help no one at MSN is helping me. Why can I not sign in
Windows Live Messenger and does it have anything to do with it saying I am
NOT connected to .NET Messenger
