I have a small SBS 2000 network. My current server is on its last legs and I
cannot get into certain areas to see all my settings. I have a new SBS
2003r2 box ready to go. I am not going to do a migration I am just going
take out my old server and set up my new server as if Im starting from
scratch. My question is if I set up my new server with the same servername
and domain is that going to cause a problem on the client machines when I am
instructed to do the client setup? Thank you.

Hello Jared,

YES, all computers have to rejoin the NEW domain, all useraccounts have to
be created new, all policies etc. etc. etc. Just using the same name is NOT
the same for the rest of the configuration. All SID's are new and the old
ones have no relationship to the new installed SBS.

Also you should better post to:
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

There are the SBS experts.

Best regards

Yes. even though they have the same server name and domain the clients will
see it as a new domain. Each domain has an assoiated SAM. In order for your
clients not to see it as a new domain you must carry the SAM into the new
domain (upgrade). Creating a new domain from scratch creates a new SAM. You
will have to remove the client PC from the old domain, add it to the new
domain and deal with the new profiles that will be created.

Thank you both for responding. If I set up the clients during the client
setup phase of the new server install will that be adequate to attach them to
the new domain? If not, do I have to delete something from the client
computers prior to running the new client setup on them?

Hello Jared,

As said before better ask here, because the client setup is a SBS feature:
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

Not sure about SBS but with the regular Win 2k domain your clients would
have to be removed from the domain they are now in and added to the new
domain you are making.

The best way to migrate your network and using your same server name is to
use the swing technician manual.

http://www.sbsmigration.com/pages/96/

migrate your bussiness in two day, with minimal downtime

good luck,

Chris
