SBS 2003 Domain Issue

Grretings,

I have a problem that I am trying to work through. I have two SBS 2003 R2
systems in different locations with different domain names, for the purpose
of simplicity we will call them domain a and domain b. I would like to
connect the two through a BOVPN so that resources can be shared, i.e.
database on domain a should be accessed through domain b, domain b can use
domain a printers, etc. I have hooked up a BOVPN (Watchguard Core & Edge).
I can get domain a to send traffic and domain b to send traffic, but neither
can receive, what needs to be done on the SBS domains to allow the
connection between each other. If someone can point me to a good source for
information or offer something up, it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.

-ps

For what it's worth, BOVPN doesn't mean anything to me either. Since you're
using your hardware as endpoints, the VPN itself is not going to be SBS or
even Windows related. You haven't explained exactly what isn't working with
your current setup - name resolution problems? What exactly happens?

Regarding sharing resources - you can't set up trusts in SBS. You'll have to
have user accounts for each user in each SBS domain and there's no way to
sync the passwords. If these two offices are part of the same company, it
would probably be a good plan to ditch SBS in one location & set up regular
W2003 (or 2008) server in the branch office location instead - it can be a
DC in the SBS domain as well as a DNS/file/print server.

Wow. Now that you've gone and made new friends, I suggest that you learn to
play nicely with the other kids on the playground if you want them to
continue giving you *free tech support.* Attitude counts - as does spelling
and grammar. Did I mention *free* ?

Frankly, there's only so much most people will be willing to put up with if
they're being financially compensated, so in a strictly volunteer
situation....I suggest you tone it down if you want any help.

Help us to help you:

Oh brother I think you need to pay for someone to come in and help you
instead of using a free volunteer newsgroup and then belittling those who
respond.

Since I don't recognize the posting nickname I'll assume this is your first
time inquiring in these newsgroups
I've been posting free information regarding SBS in these newsgroups for
over 10 years.

Dont recognize the term "BOVPN".
But you do realize you'll have to add CALs as well
You'll have to add CALs on domain A for the domain b people accessing and
vice versa.

It is unique Watchgaurd terminology. I believe it means "Between Offfice
VPN",...so it is their term for what everyone else calls a "Site to Site
VPN" or a "Rotuer to Router VPN".

They are usually more pleasant that I am, or it might be better said that I
am usually less pleasant than they.

What you fell into was making this an SBS question while using terminology
unique to your Firewal Device that confused the people who were expecting
this to be an SBS issue.

I'm in a good mood today for some stupid reason,...someone must have spiked
my Pepsi or something.

Anyway,...the root of your problem is the two Watchgaurd devices. The
Access Controls in the WG boxes is limiting the traffic to only
"one-way",...each from their own perspective. Since these are most likey
single-subnet LANs there is not likely a routing problem.

Come up with two *workgroup* machines that have nothing to do with the SBS
domains. Place one in each LAN. Configure the same workgroup name on
each,.. a few shares on each,...and an identical set of local user
accounts/passwords on each. Do *all* of your testing from these two
machines. When the two workgroup machines can communicate properly over the
VPN then the BOVPN is fine and can be left alone from that point.

I can't say anything about the interaction between the two SBS Domans and
the issues or legalities between them. I'll leave that up to the people who
know the product.
