I have a newly installed SBS 2003. Windows update now does not work, error
0x80072EFD. Updates did work when the server was first configured three days
ago (I have confirmed this by looking at updates in Add/Remove programs).

However I have installed and subsequently removed ISA 2004 since then (due
to conflict with the AV. I will reinstall when I have worked out how to get
them to work together)

I have checked:
- network adapters and dns settings are normal. Other websites (including
SSL) can be browsed from the server, no problem
- I have added the update websites to the trusted sites in IE
- I have checked the connection settings to ensure they are not still
looking for the ISA proxy server (and they're not)
- hardware firewall is correctly configured. However, Windows Update
doesn't even work if the firewall is disabled
- AV. I have uninstalled (and reinstalled) this but this made no difference
- I have rerun the CECEIW to reconfigure the RRAS firewall

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Regards,
Ben

Error: 80072EFD = ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT

Thanks for the assistance. I had already read all of these articles but
actually hadn't tried two of the suggestions in the third article:
"You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" error message, an "Error 0x80072EFD"
error message,
or an "Error 0x80072f76" error message if you try to use the Microsoft
Windows Update
Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941

After modifying the hosts file and "Remov(ing) the proxy server entry from
the WinHTTP proxy configuration" the updates work. It occurs to me now that
I don't think I ever actually rebooted after uninstalling ISA 2004. Clearly
this was the issue. Thanks for your providing the links.

Regards
Ben
