SBS 2003 - Login Screen disappears (Gray screen)

Hi,

I have an ML350 G5, SBS 2003 R2 (Fully serviced packed + patches)
Once a week (Random Day) the server will lose the log on box and slowly
stops to respond, the only way to correct the problem is to hard reboot the
server then it is fine again.

I have gone through event viewer and I can’t see anything that pin points it
but one error that occurred once saying explorer.exe hung.
Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried accessing the SBS by RDP from a workstation when it seems
unresponsive at the console?

Hi, Yes i have it also just goes to a gray screen, it is like a background
service locks up.

I do not have the answer but wanted to state that this is happening to us as
well on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. We remote desktop, just gray.
When I go to console it is just Gray. We hit Ctrl Alt Del, nothing happens.
When trying to reboot remotely we get a shutdown is in progress 1115. I
tried to bing this and get people talking but no solutions.

I had this happen once, fortunately after a hard reboot I haven't seen it
since.

When you try and RDP from a client make sure you do NOT have the /console
(or /admin for newer RDP versions) in your RDP command line. I was able to
get in that way and found the console session was stuck, couldn't log it out
or reboot (it went through the motions but did nothing). Since yours is
repeatable maybe you can try manually shutting down services (or killing
processes if you know what you are doing) before trying to reboot to see
what the culprit is (check memory usage as well).

You may want to do a scan with malwarebytes and verify you are clean,
especially if you ever surf from the server.

In the 3 cases we have seen we hard booted and it came up fine. It seems that
when we install Windows Critical Updates or via WSUS when the server states
it wants to reboot we run into this at times.

Hello,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that:

The login screen disappear when you start the SBS 2003.

If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

First of all, to isolate the issue from any 3 party software that prevent
the services from starting, you may consider booting the server into a
Clean Boot environment to see whether it works:

1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK and restart your computer.

If the issue disappear with clean boot, it indicates that some
software/updates crash the login dialog. You can uninstall recently
installed software/updates one by one to find out the culprit.

If the error persists, please collect the following information for further
investigation:

1. Collect the Winlogon.log and USERENV.log for further troubleshooting.

Have you found a solution for this issue yet. I have had the same issue on
several servers for 3 or 4 weeks. I've not found an anser on the web yest our
servers are win 2003 R2 stanadard.

There is Windows 2003 R2 Standard, with all patches installed, last time i had installed some security update, but had not restarted machine at the time it was asked, what the problem can be ? Problem is that i can restart it manualy, just have to ride there ~800kms
