I seen to have a problem I can't fix.

SBS 2003 Std - at some point a resintall over the top has been done and a
general mess made.

I've managed to get most things working again but selecting anything from
the mgt console in the backup section gives "Unspecificed Error" in a
windows internet explorer window. I've removed / installed (no reinstall
option) the administration component which tell me to reapply any SP's but
SP1 refuses to reinstall which is why I think I keep getting the error.
Nothing in the event user to give any help either.

Any suggestions ?

Please run a scan with the SBS 2003 BPA and fix any problems it finds.

Already been there... There are a couple of warnings but nothing "critical".

Has the default Backup User account been deleted?

The Backup Configuration Wizard ends and you receive an "Unspecified error"
error message in Small Business Server 2003

The username exists but I can't swap it to another as I get the same error
picking select a new tape changer from the menu. To clarify the wizard
doesn't even start - a new window with the error and OK button pops up as
soons as anything is clicked on.

I must admit Im stumped.

Just re-read that , checked the Backup User account (rather than the tape
changer account) and yes - the account seems to have been disabled. Thanks
for the pointer, I'll be back in a bit if thats not the problem

What is the exact text of the error you're getting when you try to open the
Backup console?
Are there any errors in the event logs?

IIRC, the Backup User account will have a red circle with white X during
normal non-backup times. It is only activated when the SBS Backup Wizard is
configured and the scheduled backup tasks is called.

Appreciate you spending the time to help.

The exact error message is "Unspecified Error" and just an OK button. the
dialog title bar say "Windows Internet Explorer".

I also note the monitoring and reporting gives "MMC could not create the
snap-in." if that could be related?

No criticals in either the application or system event logs.

SP1 setup tells me there was an error and to check the log file - contents

I'm thinking your initial thought about SP1 not allowing reinstall is the
problem.

What error do you get when you try to reinstall SBS 2003 SP1?
