SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 migration headache!

Hi folks,

Hoping someone can help me

After spending yesterday prepping the source server- running both SBS 2003
Best Practices Analyzer and Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (and resolving
all issues until they both came back clean), full backup, Migration Prep
Tool, answer file etc I was finally ready to get going with the destination
server today. I was very thorough with the documentation, taking it all step
by step.

All looked well, until it seemed to hang on what looked to be a final step.
I don't recall getting the replication delay pop-up that I've seen mentioned,
but at any rate it got to the stage where it started up and prepared the
desktop. When the desktop appeared, I was faced with a Help window advising
that the installation had failed and I had to start from scratch.

When I checked the log, the last line I can see:
"Task: Waiting for replication to finish"

When I open the SBS Console to check Users or Roles, I get an error
"The Windows SBS Console feature is not set up correctly"

Lastly, on the Task Pad, when I click View Installation Issues:
"The installation of Windows Small Business Server 2008 cannont finish.
Status- Active"

AD Users and Computers in Administrative Tools shows all my users. There's
no log for Exchange (a good thing) and when I open the console, I can see
placeholders for all the mailboxes that have yet to be shifted. There are no
obvious network issues- I can browse to the source server by name or IP;
gateway and internet access are all fine. Its looks like replication is
fine, but it won't let me even attempt to run the Migration Wizard (even just
for a peek!). When I attempt this logged in as Administrator, it doesn't like
it, and when I log in as another named user with administrative privileges, I
get a box to the effect that the migration wizard has stopped working.

I'm at a loss, despite much Googling and attempting minor fixes. I think I
have no choice but to start again, but if I do that, I believe I'm going to
have to restore the source server from backup as well.

Please, please, any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
T.

SBS2008 Migration: Active Directory replication is taking longer than
expected.:

P.S. all you need to do is a system state restore, not a full restore.

Also check out www.sbsmigration.com as a fall back method.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the response. I'm afraid that I tried that and though
it sounds like the same issue, I believe this guy applied the Hotfix to the
SBS 2003 server while the SBS 2008 migration install was hung. After the fix,
his migration continued and was successful. My situation is that somehow the
install continued passed the hang, and allowed me to log in and get the
desktop up, along with SBS console. It was there I was presented with the
Help window saying the installation has failed. All the same, I put the
Hotfix on the source server, hoping it would "magically" do something in the
background during a replication, but it was not to be . I do now suspect
an authoratative restore was run on this server in the past, so the hotfix is
applicable.

I think I'm going to have start over. You say a System State restore on the
source server will do the trick? I have one from right after the Migration
Prep Tool ran (with no errors) but from before I applied the Hotfix. Should I
uninstall the Hotfix, run the restore and apply the hotfix again before
kicking off SBS 2008 migration on the destination server? This will be on
Monday, Day 3 at it! I have to get it right!

Once again, thanks for any help!

Yup just roll back the system state and then review the ADUC and just
make sure the new server is removed.

Yup just roll back the system state and then review the ADUC and just
make sure the new server is removed. I wouldn't uninstall the hotfix,
just do a restore and then reinstall the hotfix just to make sure.

Alternatively check out www.sbsmigration.com for an alternative way to
do this.

In addition to Susan's suggestions you should be aware that this newsgroup
will be shut down by MS in a few days so you might want to move this
question to the new forum.
