I initially tried to rename the file dsa.msc to dsa2.msc, however permission to do this was denied until I took ownership of the file as Administrator and gave myself Full Permission. I was then able to change the file name to dsa2.msc. Running the same file but with a new name allowed the Active Directory Users and Computers Console to load properly without the C++ runtime error. I then renamed the file back to dsa.msc and tried to run it again, however the C++ runtime error came back as I had expected it might. I have another user account with administrative privileges, so I logged in to the server using that user's credentials, and ran the normal shortcut in Administrative Tools which points to dsa.msc. This opened the Active Directory Users and Computers Console properly. This indicates that something related to the Administrator account and the dsa.msc file is probably slight skewed in the registry for some reason, so if I can compare registry entries for the two users relating to this file, I may be able to see exactly what has changed and hopefully rectify the issue. |

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. I notice that this was back in February, were you ever able to resolve this fault. Thank you. David. NickM wrote: SBS 2008 AD Users and Computers Snap-in MSVCRT.DLL odd fault 13-Feb-09 Hi My SBS Server 2008 x64 system has developed a fault this morning whereby I cannot open the Active Directory Users and Computers snap in from the shortcut in Administrative Tools. I am not aware that anything relevant has changed on the system to cause this. It was working and then ten minutes later it wasn't. I was successfully able to use the AD Users and Computers snap-in this morning at about 09:10 and then at around 09:20 it wouldn't work. I had also been working in the Exchange Management Console and had deleted a user mail box just prior to the problem, so this new behaviour may be linked I have rebooted the server and the error remains. There were some updates automatically downloaded and applied yesterday, however I have been successfully able to use the AD Users and Computers snap-in this morning at about 09:10 and then at around 09:20 it wouldn't work. There are a few other people who have experienced the exact same error, but there's not any information that I can find about how to fix it I get a C++ Runtime Error when trying to gain access through Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers. I get this error whenever that is accessed via that method I have been able to manually run MMC.EXE and add the snap in for Active Directory Users and Computers. This has allowed me to bypass the error, but so far I've found only one person to have had this happen in SBS 2008 x64 and one person who has had it happen in Server 2008 Standard. The error offers to send the error to Microsoft, but does not return a solution. Nick, Thanks for the info here. As you mentioned there is not a lot about this online. I'm having the same issue with a SBS 08 I just installed. I opened the AD users and computers console, closed it, and then tried to open it again. I get the same C++ Runtime error. Did you ever find the cause or a solution, other than renaming the file, to fix the profile that is affected?
