Now that many of you have been "living" with 2008 for a bit, the big
talk when it first came out what the built-in backup solution didn't
recognize Tape drives, thus requiring 3rd party solutions.

So, is the backup solution that came with SBS sufficient using
rotating external drives? i've used it a couple of times and really
like how fast the backups are and restoring files was pretty easy and
painless...i would much prefer doing that to 3rd party software,
etc...

Thoughts?

Even before 2008, I've preferred rotating external drives (or drive
technology like the REV or RD1000) over tapes, for exactly the reasons you
listed. Size, easier restore, faster backup...I've left tapes long ago and
haven't looked back.

yeah, i've felt that way and that is why i bought a REV drive for
2003, but that isn't supported with the new 2008 backup and i really
don't like putting on 3rd party software if what comes standard is
sufficient - hence the questions here...

We're using the same pair of 500 gig USB drives we used with SBS 2003 when
we outgrew the DAT drive we bought with the server. The difference is that
rather than a week's worth of backups, with 2008 (and much bigger drives) we
get months worth of backups on each drive.

I'll admit to not having done a lot of testing, but I have done a system
state restore, and I've read the procedure for a bare metal reinstall, and I
think I'm quite happy without third-party software.

excellent info Bill, thanks...i was wondering about a Bare Metal
Reinstall using the backup software in SBS 2008 - when i get the
server in i'll run some tests and see what it is like...
