SBS 2008 Premium and SQL

Server vendors install SBS 2008 standard edition when premium edition is
purchased.
You are given a license to install SBS Premium on another machine so that you
can install SQL on the "Premium" installation or you can install SBS Premium
in a virtual server on the same server.
Can I just install the SQL that comes with Premium on the SBS 2008 Standard
server and forget about the virtual install all together?

afaik, there is nothing in the EULA to prevent you from installing the SQL
on the SBS, but you may have performance problems depending on the app and
the number of users.

I would ask the LOB vendor about the performance. Also, there is a SBS Premium
license for the users who actually connect to the SQL, the rest can use a
standard license.

If you decide to virtualize, you install either the standard server or the
special hyper v server that you can download, and only the hyper V role.
Then you install SBS in one virtual instance and Standard Server + SQL in
the second. Plan on using a fairly hefty box for this, with all the RAM
your budget allows or the mobo will hold, which ever comes first.

Do they do this so that you have the option of purchasing Standard CALs for
users who do not need to access the Premium features? If I have 40 users but
only 10 of them need access to SQL then I could purchase 30 Standrad CALs and
10 Premium CALs. I am still wondering if i can just install SQL that comes in
the premium package on the Standard version.
Are these usergroups used any longer?

Digging around I found this:
" The basic license for SBS requires that the core components reside on the
SBS server. This means that Exchange, IIS, and Sharepoint have to remain on
the SBS server. Even though the Premium Edition provides a second server
operating system, the SBS license prevents the core components from being
installed on the second server. SQL is the exception to this rule, as the SQL
software bundled with the Premium Edition can be installed on either server."
Now I am looking to see if I can just install the premium edition on one
server, and if so, can I purchase Standard CALs for the users who will not be
using a premium feature.

Since the Premium Edition includes a second license for Windows Standard
Server, the only way you can install the entire Premium Edition on one server
is to create at least one virtual server.

Since installing the hyper-v role on SBS is not supported, you would be better
served to install the hyper-v role on the Standard Server, then install two
virtual servers, one for SBS the other for Standard Server.

Or, you can simply install SQL on the SBS and not install the Standard Server
that is included with the Premium Edition. Not as a virtual server on the
same box, not as a "real" server on a second box. But if you ever do install
Windows Server Standard on a second box, the best use of that box would be
either for SQL or for TS, or possibly both.

Regardless of how you install SQL, either on the SBS or on the Server Standard
that comes with Premium, you still only need Premium CALS for the users that
actually use SQL. This has nothing to do with the second license, which
could be used, either on metal or inside of a VM, as a file server, print
server terminal server or any other role allowed by Windows Standard Server.

Also, note that however you install SQL, you will need considerably more
RAM than the MS announced minimum of 4 GB, whether you install it directly
on the SBS or in a virtual copy of Windows Standard Server running in a VM.
