SBS 2008 Screwed Up Backups

Hi folks,

I recently migrated from SBS 2008 -> SBS 2008 running as a VM in Hyper-V.
Setup backup job and backups running well to a External USB drive.
Bought a 2nd External USB Drive thinking I could swap them out each day and
take the previous night's drive home with me. I guess that doesn't work, as
the next day after I swapped out, the backups failed. I swapped out the
drives back to the one that was working, and it's failing too. Tried to
delete the job and recreate it in the SBS wizard, and it won't recreate.
Gives me an error about "The server cannot configure the backup schedule.
Please try again.".
Looking at the logs, it seems to hang here:

If it helps, we use exactly that methodology on our physical SBS 2008
servers. Two external USB drives, swapping them over each morning.
This works really well.

So perhaps you can narrow things down to the way that Hyper-V is
exposing the USB drives to your VM?

All that I can say is that this process does work on a physical SBS-2008
server. I generally use the "Safely remove" mechanism when I switch drives.
Every once in a while I have trouble with the switched drive being
recognized. If I am remote, I restart the server and that fixes it. If I
am local, I remove and re-attach the drive.

But, most of the time, a simple rotation of two drives works fine.

Another data point. The External Drive shows up under Computer as a 3rd hard
drive, with drive assignment B:. I can click on it and look at the
previously good backups. I "thought" on a VM, the external drive would be
unviewable except for backing up/restoring. Does that make a difference?

I have read where this problem can occur if the data you are backing up is
greater than the capacity of your external drive, but that is not my case
here. It's a new server with about 80Gb of data, and I have a 500Gb external
drive.
It's giving me a "The request could not be performed because of an i/o
device error" message. I'm just trying to figure out how to recover.
If I shutdown the VM and remove the external physical disk and re-add it
will that make it happy?

working, and what is the procedure to add a 2nd drive to the box, and how to
