SBS 2008 standard outgoing fax busy signal retry fail

I have installed a brand new SBS 2008 stnd server with a Mainpine Iq express
2 port Fax Board. I rcv faxes with no problems. However when I send i get
Line Busy. I have had the lines tested. ( Mainpine suggestion ) as they
thought it may be noisey line. however Fax machines this would replace work
fine on same line. Phone company tested lines and they are clean. I have had
Main pine login and install the latest firmware. This also did not resolve
issue. I have also removed this card and installed it in My sbs2003 and it
works with no issue. (same server hardware) I have looked online for persons
with similar issues. I found one post that had a siilar issue with microsoft
moderator basically telling him it was a issue with recipient fax system.
(all of them?) the Poster belives it is an OSS issue. If he dialed a fax # to
a machine next to him and hit the manual rcv at sametime then it would rcv
fax. if not the fax machine will not even ring. He believes it is a timing
issue of some sort in OS control. I have not tried the fax to a nearby system
but I have no doubt it will be the same. I and My client are not happy. he
would like fax capability for server. I would like to be paid for hardware
and service. Is there a resolution to this technical problem.

Maybe he can help on why it is not working?

Sorry, I've given up on Faxing in SBS2008 and got everyone on an e fax
soltion, Cheaper in most cases.

1. Do you have to dial a 9 or some other code to make an outgoing call on
that telephone line? Maybe that is not getting dialed?

2. Are there any other devices (usual suspects are phone, fax, or multi
function printer) that might be connected to that same telephone line
somewhere else in the office or building?

3. If you call that fax number (that SBS 2008 is connected to) from
somewhere else, does the modem receive the incoming call notification (ie. a
light blinks on the modem)? Can the modem/SBS 2008 answer that call or does
something else answer it (indicating another device is connected to the same
line)?

---answer: No. the line(s) come from the 66 block direct to the Fax
Machines. Punch down, server, fax machines all in same room. There are no
other devices on the Line(s)

---answer: The modem is an internal card. No lights to blink. If I unplug
the fax machines the dialed numbers will ring and not pickup. If I plug the
lines into the server and dial I get the usual fax initialization tones.

Given every ones experience with things that should work but don't for some
reason or another an alternate solution may have to be implemented. Having
said that. Microsoft has put out a product that many base thier lively hood
off of. For something as simple as this and at the cost of just the OS it
should have been rectified immediately. To give SBS a we will deal with it at
leasure attitude or your using SBS what do you expect. Is very irresponsible
to thier customers. It works fine in SBS 2003. ...Ahh well rant done.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems like you have the Fax
"Machines" and the "Fax Card" connected in parallel instead of series.

It should be as follows:

PHONE CABLE
||
Server Fax Card (LINE PORT)
||
Server Fax Card (PHONE SET PORT)
||
Manual Fax Machine

Additionally, the manual fax machines should be set to answer TWO to
FOUR rings after the Server Fax Card pickup setting.

One last thing - don't use a Internal Fax board unless you can get one
that included complete diagnostic software - A multi-serial card (you
can get them with up to 32 serial ports) works best with external modems
so that you don't have to crack the server open to troubleshoot.

Well I don't know why I've had issues to be honest.
However It's up to manufactures to get drivers to work
And IMO that is where the issue is...

Most Manufactures don't Think or count SBS as a Supported Product
or it's a "Should Work since it's Server 2008"

As we all know the "Should Work" doesn't fly 100%

As far as an e fax solution Each company has pros an cons
depending on how many faxes they make.
Find what's best for the client you have.

I know Microsoft probably doesn't like me saying that I've had issues with
the Fax in SBS2008
But my personal issues have had me stay away from it...
(I can't just buy the same Fax card and get 100% success.)

Maybe I was not clear with my troubleshooting steps.

I have two SEPERATE FAX LINES.

That go into TWO SEPERATE PORTS. Note: look at the mainpine website.

the fax machines where connected directly to the lines coming from the 66
block for troubleshooting then disconnected completely and the phone lines
connected to the fax board in server.

There are NO OTHER devices on these two lines. Repeat: the lines are punched
down on a 66 block and go DIRECTLY to the fax board in server.

I have been back and forth with Mainpine and Microsoft.

Microsoft basically has told me there can't be anything wrong with thier
software it must be Mainpine.

Mainpine is doing thier best to find a resolution.

Hint1: Hey look if I plug this modem into a Win2k3SBS system it works. Now
how about that.

Hint2: same server hardware.

Hint3: given other variables that may affect performance it still comes down
to the OS. (windows 2008)




AS for the external Modem Solution I have some USR V. everthing modems I may
have to use. But given the Mainpine card should be working with Windows 2008
,and paid a good amount, I would like it to do so.

Still Looking for solutions.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!

Windows SBS fax setup wizard does not set two options necessary for proper
operation. After you run the SBS fax setup wizard, goto control panel|phones
and modems|dialing rules. Must configure the area code and country of origin
and switch from pulse to Tone. After changes where made and fax service
restarted then was able to send faxes with out any issues. Tech at Mainpine
figured it out.

Mainpine Tech support: +10 for going above and beyond what was necessary. It
was not thier products issue.

Microsoft Tech support: -10 for not owning up to or even knowing thier own
product to support it.
