I'm convinced (after ten years in this game) that tape backups are HIGHLY
unreliable, and only work reliably on brand spanking new installs. Native Windows Backup, Backup Exec, ArcServe, you name it. Sooner or later, if you have a system that has been around any length of time with anything "extra" installed - such as BlackBerry - it will blow out your backups. You'll never get it to work again. You might as well just wipe the whole server and start over. I hate it. Now that I've got that out of the way, I'll show you a "bad" backup that isn't working properly. Nothing fancy about it. Just went with the plain ol' vanilla Backup Wizard from Server Management. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't work. I'm going to reply to this posting immediately, and show you a "good" backup on a brand new system i just installed. No problem, of course...because, like i said, it's brand new. Give it a few months and it will break as well, never to work again until I wipe the entire server. Have a nice day everyone! Here's the BAD job log: 4/16/2005 6:59 PM ------------------------------- Date: 4/16/2005 Time: 6:59 PM User: Administrator ------------------------------- Backup Runner started. By the way. The first (bad) backup is not backing up Exchange, even though it
says it is. When I go into Restore, there's no data in the Information Store under Mailboxes, or Public Folders...or anything else for that matter.... I gues that's what I'm looking for help with. Sorry for the rants, but I'm just peed off. "Macker" wrote: > As promised, here's what a "good" SBS2003 backup looks like (for those of you > who may never see one). Hi Macker
The reason that SBS Backup is able to get Exchange without dismounting the Store is the way I understand it Volume Shdow Copy. On the Bad backup VSS failed so naturally you didn't get Exchange. There is an article by Larry Lentz you might find useful in trouble shooting this if you scroll down on this link. http://www.smbnation.com/newsletter/...-march2004.htm The most obvious is to be sure that any SQL databases you have are in Simple recovery mode not Full. -- Frank McCallister SBS MVP COMPUMAC "Macker" <> wrote in message news:74C145CC-F47A-4ADF-B78D-... > By the way. On both occasions, the next backup was OK, and I couldn't find any explanation in the logs as to what had stopped VSC working. I know about KB828481, and reading it and related posts does not fill me with confidence that Microsoft knows what it's doing here. The first occasion coincided (though it *may* be unrelated) with the monitoring system giving up on sending me emails. The Alerter still does, and monitoring still generates reports and accepts reconfiguration. It even sends me an email saying it's been reconfigured but that's the last I hear from it. Reinstalling didn't help. No, I haven't restored any backed-up SQL database material... |

The server is totally fried now after working nicely for a year (except for
failed intermittant backups). - Shadow Copy was turned off on the C Drive. I turned it back on. - I change the SQL databases from Full to Simple. - I also ran a checkdsk on C & D at next startup. - Rebooted. It took A-G-E-S to start up again. It started up with tons and tons of errors. Almost too many to list. SQL also failed to start. This error keeps popping up, in a loop: "MS DTCconsole program encounted a problem" (send error report, etc.) I wish now I'd never messed with this crappy "Backup" program, and just stuck with Veritas, even though it was working badly, at least I was getting something.... Ouch! At this point I believe I would call PSS and get upper level support.

Thanks Frank.
There is indeed too much wrong. We're ordering a new server. This little box is getting maxed out anyway. It's a Dell PC/1GHz/512MB RAM (max), running BBY as well. It's run okay until now, but the recent changes just seemed to "total" it! I've got it up and running again - barely - very slowly. That's another thing I can't figure out...it's been running really slowly ever since these problems occured, however all the process are running normally...nothing seems to be using unusually high resources. Very bizarre? Any advice on setting up a new SBS2003 box- i.e. migrating the domain? Won't I run into the "only one domain controller allowed" problem? Perhaps I should start a new thread on this one. Thanks for helping all the same. Bryan (Macker). "Frank McCallister SBS MVP" wrote: > Ouch!
