SBS2003 Exchange Problem

SBS2003 Std

I have 2 SBS2003 Std servers that are having a problem with the Exchange.
The end-users are telling me they are not receiving any new emails but they
are able to somehow send. When I look at the Event Viewer/Application log I
see errors like the one below every 2-3 minutes for different users. When I
try and stop/restart the information store it fails to stop the service. My
only recourse has been to restart the server.

This issue keeps popping up every 2-3 days and at different times during the
24hr day and I need to restart the server. I get no other warnings to alerts
emailed to me and the server reports everything is fine.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

-Richard K

Exchange mailbox Server response timeout: Server: [bpiserver.bpi.local]
User: []. Exchange ActiveSync Server failed to communicate
with the Exchange mailbox server in a timely manner. Verify that the Exchange
mailbox Server is working correctly and is not overloaded.

How big is your store files?

Do you have limits on mail-box sizes?

You can turn up the logging in Exchange System Manager and see more events.
But Leythos is asking the right question. Exchange 2003 with SP2 allows
you to increase the size of the store to 75 GB (please don't do quite that)
but you must change a reg key to do it.

Private store is around 14gb and Public is less than 1gb. I also upped the
limits to 25gb for the public and there is no drive space issue. I also have
put no limits on mailbox sizes.

Richard,

You know it would be helpful to have the actual EventID# of the error.

Is it EventID# 3007 or 3005?

If 3005, please read the following and see which scenario closely resembles
yours.
http://eventid.net/display.asp?event...&source=Server
ActiveSync&phase=1

Do you have a third party antispam installed on it that could be interfering
with ActiveSync?

What kind of phone is causing the problem? Is it a Palm with Intellisync?
The above link indicated one admin disabled that phone's ActiveSync and the
error went away.

Has anything changed in IIS?

If you have a firewall, check to see the ActiveSync sessions are not
expiring before they have the opportunity to be processed. Read the
following for more info.

Sorry I did not put the event code in. It is 3007 so your link probably does
not help me. On 1 server having a problem there are 5 WM6 phones (Moto Q)
and on the other server there are 2 phones (IPhone). Both servers have been
in commission for over 18 months with these phones with no problem until
about 2 weeks ago. I also don't see a pattern of time when this happens. I
am also using Trend Micro WFBS 5.1 and this too has been on the server for a
long time. I have changed nothing in IIS.

As I also said I made the registry change to make the Private store 25gb in
size so I have no limits and my drive space is plentiful.

Thank you for posting the EventID#.

From my researching your question prior to my previous post, I've found
numerous instances regarding two main things, 1) a third party antispam
service, and 2) firewall configuration. Eventid.net doesn't have much on
this.

Therefore, the firewall config link I posted would possibly apply. Also,
just to try something, if you disable Trend completely, does it work?

I meant to post the following search string I used in Google. Take a look at
some of the links, please. I normally go through them before I post a
possible resolution, however in your case, it may be due to one or more
things, so it would be better for you to take a look and ascertain the
search results.

http://www.google.com/search?q=event...rchBox&ie=&oe=

It may also be the following link, which I've seen similar issues in the
past when using Windows Mobile phones and you have Forms Based
Administration enabled with an Exchange 2003 server (SBS or not). THis
causes problems with Windows Mobile phones, based on the way Windows Mobile
and Active Sync works.

Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access errors occur when SSL or
forms-based authentication is required for Exchange Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379/en-us

Here's another possibility that I quoted from:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Soft..._22982313.html
"I managed to find an acceptable solution to this problem. I noticed in the
logs that the problem was occurring every 29 hours, almost exactly. It
turns out that the setting "Recycle worker process" under the
ExchangeApplicationPool properties in IIS Manager was set to 1740 minutes (9
hours). It appears that, for reasons still unknown, the recycle was failing
thereby leaving the application non-functional until IIS was restarted. I
unchecked the "Recycle worker process" setting and the problem has
disappeared."

I hope that helps...

Ace, I was coming up with some of the same things but didn't see a link
between these and what I am seeing but at this point I'm going to go down
several roads and see if there is actually some link. The strange part is
this has been working fine on this server for well over a year, phones and
all. To see this pop up now throws me off. There is also no "29 hour" time
pattern.

I'll keep you posted on what I see.

Thanks!

Did you re-run the wizard, perhaps, where it enabled Forms Authentication.
However, I thought that was enabled by default on an SBS box.

Did you recently add a certificate?
