SBS2003 - main server offline - remote access to the member server

Hi,
A customer of mine has lost their main server due to some contractors
cutting through the mains cables to the building. Power is now restored
and the member server is back up and running, however the SBS2003 server
hasn't. from what I can get out of them it sounds like the PSU may have
gone, which is annoying as it is on a UPS. Anyway, I can VPN into the
network and can get rdp to the member server, however it will not let me
login due to the main one not being available, is this standard behavior
for member servers ? The workstations can get in fine obviously using
cached credentials so I assumed this would be the case for servers.
It also turns out the LOB sql apps on the member server aren't working
for the users either, should I have made this server a BDC ?

Hi Cris,

thanks for clearing that one up for me. Unfortunately it turns out the 2
LOB apps on the member use windows authentication for access which is
why that is broken.
Stuff the network overhead, this will become a BDC once the main one is
sorted out
Thanks again
Simon

if that member server is an Application Server or Terminal Server it is a
VERY BAD IDEA to also make it a DC.

BTW: If you insit on making it a DC, which from sounds I wouldn't, you will
also need to tell it to be a Global Catalogue.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply,
Point taken, it won't become a BDC. I will have a word with the LOB
suppliers about changing their app to authenticate through either a
local account or sql credentials. I convinced the customer to put this
in as I knew their main SBS server was ageing and does need replacing
but their budget couldn't run to a migration to SBS08 yet.
Good news is the SBS server is up and running again with a new PSU, at
least I will sleep better tonight.
