I am running SBS2003 with three clients. On one of the clients I want to use
business contact manager together with Outlool 2003. I was able to install
it, but for some reason OL does not show the tab.

Is there a way to make this work?

Thnx in advance.

I think SBS2003 SP1 includes this update, but if you haven't deployed SP1
yet this should fix it.

Hello Robert,

Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.

Also, many thanks for AdamHannemann's great input.

According to your description, I understand that you can not find Business
Contact Manager (BCM) after you install it in Outlook 2003. If I have
misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

In general, Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager is designed for
small businesses and it has been designed to work with POP3, IMAP,
HTML-based e-mail systems, Microsoft Small Business Server and hosted
Microsoft Exchange servers only. But it only works in SBS 2003 and it does
not support other version of the Exchange account officially. You may refer
to the following articles for additional information:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/outl...dinfo/faq.mspx

So if you use Exchange account, it only works in the SBS 2003 environment;
if you use POP3 or other accounts, we should use it without any problems.
At this point, I suggest that we use the following steps to test the issue:

Step 1: Enable items in Outlook
-----------------------------
1. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Office Outlook.

2. In the About Microsoft Office Outlook dialog box, click Disabled Items.

3. In the Disabled Items dialog box, click Business Contact Manager Add-in,
and then click Enable.

4. Click Close to close the Disabled Items dialog box.

5. Click OK to close the About Microsoft Office Outlook dialog box.

6. Close, and then restart Outlook 2003.

For additional information, please refer to the following Microsoft KB
article:

Business Contact Manager menu items are missing in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=840778

Can you find BCM now? If not, please go to next steps:

Step 2: associate Business Contact Manager with your profile
-----------------------------
1. On the File menu, click Data File Management.

2. In the Outlook Data Files dialog box, click Add.

3. In the Types of storage list, click "Business Contact Manager Database",
and then click OK.

4. In the Associate Database Wizard, do one of the following:

If you installed Business Contact Manager for the first time, select Create
new database, click Next, and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are restoring a previous database association, select Use an
existing database, select the Business Contact Manager database that you
want to restore, and then click Next. Restart Outlook.

Step 3: Modify Registry keys
-----------------------------
If you do not see the menu or toolbar, it may occur if the BCM add-in
failed to load. To try to get it back, make a backup of the Windows
registry, then run the registry editor (Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe).

In the following key, double-click LoadBehavior and change its value to 3.
Then restart Outlook.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlo ok\Addins\Microsoft.Busine
ssSolutions.eCRM.OutlookAddIn.Connect.1

Additionally, since you are running SBS 2003, I suggest that you try the
following steps on the Client side and test the issue again:

1. Install the BCM updates to Outlook 2003 via the following link:

Overview of the Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831747

2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the open box and press Enter.

3. Add the following key via the registry editor if it does not exist

Registry Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\client setup
String Value: Version
Data: 5.2

4. Quit Registry

5. Restart Outlook. Can you add BCM in the current Exchange Account now?

I am appreciated your time and cooperation. If anything is unclear, please
feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Nathan Liu (MSFT)

Here is what I've learned:
Step 1: there were no items to enable
Step 2: associate BCM with profile
this all seemed to work and I was able to create a new database
restarted outlook, then I got a message saying it could not be combined with
an Exchange profile. It was being disabled.
Step 3: both registry settings were set as suggested
It still does not show up in the disabled items list.

There is only one profile that I use, the one that has the Exchange account.
Are you telling me that BCM will never run in this profile, but that it will
run if I create a new profile with just a POP email account?

A. Download the file by clicking the Download link (above) and saving the
file to your hard disk.

B. Double-click BusinessContactManager-kb831747-client-enu.exe and follow

Add a user profile, in Outlook Help.

B. Restart Outlook, and then follow the on-screen instructions to
associate your user profile with Business Contact Manager.

2. Please turn on Cached Exchange Mode for your Outlook 2003 profile, if
you disable Cached Exchange Mode after adding the service, Business Contact

following:

The operation you selected will not complete until you click Exit from the
File menu, and then restart Microsoft Office Outlook.

f. Click Finish.

g. Quit and restart Outlook 2003.

To get additional detailed information, you may refer to the following KB
article:

Overview of the Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2003 Update:

Nathan,

I've installed the patch referenced in the first post. That did the trick.

Hello Robert,

Thank you for your quick reply.

To narrow down this issue, please perform the following steps:

To check if your Outlook 2003 profile is configured to use "Cached Exchange
Mode":

1. In Outlook 2003, click E-mail Accounts on the Tools menu.
2. Click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
3. Click your Microsoft Exchange Server, and then click Change.
4. Is the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box checked?

If Cached Exchange Mode is disabled, BCM will be removed from the profile
and you will need to create a new profile in order to again use BCM. To do
so if the client was joined domain through http://sbsserver/connectcomputer:

1. Remove all the existing Outlook profiles in Control Panel | Mail | Show
Profiles.

NOTE: You may export the rules for the user in the old profile before you
delete the profile, so that you can then import them to the new profile. To
do so:

A. Open Outlook, click Tool and then click Rules and Alerts....
B. Click Options.
C. Click Export Rules.
D. Close Outlook.

2. Make sure Outlook is closed.

3. Open Windows Explorer and go to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows
Small Business Server\Clients", double-click SBSDefault.prf, this will
automatically create the outlook profile with the correct settings for the
corresponding domain user.

If the client was joined domain manually, please manually create a new
profile:

829918 How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918

Start Outlook, BCM will start and prompt to either create a new or choose
an existing database; once it is completed, you will see "Business Tools"
on the selection menu.

- If the issue still persists, check the following registry key to ensure
it has the correct data. If not, please change the data to "5.2":

Registry Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\client setup
String Value: Version
Data: 5.2

After this is completed, you may need to restart the computer in order to
make the modification effective.

If the problem still occurs, I would like to give the following action plan:

1. Disjoin the computer from SBS domain.

2. On the SBS server | Server Management | Client Computers, and then run
the Set Up Client Computers wizard to create a computer object for the
client computer.

3. Once it is completed, log on to the client computer using a local
administrator account, and then access the "Network Configuration Wizard"
by typing "Http://sbsserver/Connectcomputer" in IE, and then join your
client computer to the domain following the instruction.

4. Use the steps I mentioned previously to check the Outlook and BCM
configuration.

If the issue still persists, please help me collect the below information
for further troubleshooting:

1. Does the issue occur to all users?

2. When you open Outlook, do you get any error message?

3. When you create a new database and restart the Outlook, do you get any
error message?
