Hi

Server Hardware: HP Proliant ML370G4
Array Controller: HP Smart Array 6400 Controllers Two Drives Mirrored and
Three in RAID5
Firmware Revision 2.80
Driver Version 5.78.0.32

OS: SBS 2003R2 SP2

Change Control Information: Last change was done on the server on 15/09/09
to install Exchange Mobile Admin Toolkit.

Issue Details:

A schaduled reboot was done on the server on 09/10/09. No windows updates
were selected to install during this time. After the reboot the server kept
rebooting soon after the Windows Logo, in a loop.
Started on safe mode and soon after displaying acpitbl.dat the server kept
rebooting. As per a post moved %SystemRoot%\drivers\update.dll and rebooted
without success.
Had to boot in Last Known Good selection to get the server backup and
running again.

Observations:
No obvious errors on the Event log prior to the issue. No Failed disks.

I am puzzled at this stage as to what caused the issue as there haven't been
any OS related changes to the server yet the booting using Last Known Good
resolved the issue.
As this is the company main server I would like to find out the reason
behind in order to prevent the issue occuring again.
Has anyone encountered similar issues. Appreciate your thoughts.

Regards
Gihan

Hello,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that:

The SBS 2003 server keeps rebooting and you resolve the issue via booting
in Last Known Good Configuration.

If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

As you resolve the issue by booting in Last Known Good Configuration
(replacing registry hives from C:\windows\repair to
C:\windows\system32\config), I think we should focus on the following
aspects to narrow down the issue:

1. Please make sure that the array controller has the latest driver and try
to upgrade the firmware for the SCSI Controller and Hard Drives if there is.
2. Even when there is no failed disks, please also double check whether the
file system on the disk is corrupted via 3rd party diagnoses tools or
Windows Chkdsk /r.
3. It is reported that if update.sys file is corrupted either in the
system32 or in the dll cache the exact same issue will happen. You may try
to check how it works if you replace this file from CD to those two
locations.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me
know.

Best regards,

Miles Li

Hey GihanZ,

I had this exact same problem with an HPDL360G5 using an HP Smart Array 6400
Controller, The problem I found was that one of the drives attached to the
6400 was faulty and wasnt properly responding to some type of ACPI power
call. I would unhook any drive you dont need to boot the os (raid 5?) and
try and just boot the mirrored drives, if that doesnt work then unhook each
of the mirrors and try booting each one.

Email me with any questions,

Mike

Hello,
Had a bit of trouble getting on to the newsgroup last week hence the late

weeks without issues. I have a scheduled a reboot on this Friday. Will see
