SBS2008 Premium

I know with my SBS2008 Premium (retail version) I have an additional license
for a Windows 2008 server that I can deploy on a 2nd machine. Do I also
have downgrade rights on this Windows 2008 Server to use Windows 2003
Server? I want to run a Blackberry Professional Server on this 2nd machine
but as I understand it it will not run in Windows 2008 64bit. If I can
legally use Windows 2003 Server where do I get a product key?

Thanks!

(SBS 2008) Downgrade Rights
http://www.microsoft.com/sbs/en/us/d...de-rights.aspx
---------------------------------------
Q. Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium comes with two Windows Server
2008 Standard technologies licenses. If I choose to, can I downgrade one of
those licenses to run an earlier version in order to support a legacy
application?

A.
As a rule, the components of the Windows Small Business Server solution
cannot be separately downgraded, however Microsoft recognizes that
line-of-business applications may experience compatibility issues moving
from one version to the next., Alternative Versions are included in the SBS
Premium Software for SQL 2005 and Windows Server 2008 x86. Although MS does
not include Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard in the package as an alternative
version, we are granting an exception to allow customers to use Windows
Server 2003 R2 Standard in place of the 2nd copy of Windows Server 2008
Standard, shipped as part of SBS 2008 Premium. This exception is being
granted until December 31, 2009.

Note: Under this exception, the customers are restricted from running both
the 2nd copy of Windows Server 2008 Standard as well as Windows Server 2003
R2 Standard (to which the customer has used as an alternative version to
Windows Server 2008 at the same time simultaneously. Also, after December
31, 2009, customers are restricted from using Windows Server 2003 R2
Standard as an alternative version to the 2nd copy of Windows Server 2008
Standard, shipped as part of SBS 2008 Premium. However, customers who have
exercised the alternative version right before December 31, 2009 can
continue to use either version of Windows Server, but not both at same time.
---------------------------------------

And if BPS will run on the second server under Windows Server 2008 32-bit,
that, of course, would not require a downgrade.

Thanks Merv for the clarification. Now where do I procure a Product
Key/media for the Windows 2003 R2 if I am going to use it?

See the FAQs on the link I posted.

Q. How can I obtain an older version than Windows Server 2003 R2?
Q. How can a Volume Licensing (VL) customer obtain downgrade media and keys
of Windows Server 2003 R2?

It should lead you to:

I'm trying that out tonight with 2008 32bit. From what I have been reading
BES has moved to v5.x but I am not sure about BPS so far. If it's still in
the 4.x version I think NOT on the 2008 windows. I'll update this thread
when I have more answers.

It appears BPS is still in 4.x versions so they are behind BES which is now
up to 5.x BES 5.x WILL support Windows 2008. BPS 4.x will not.

I am going to have to go back to windows server 2003.

Wow, some more reading and I see RIM will not be supporting BPS any more for
future versions. They are moving everyone to BES (with it's hefty price
tag). In the SBS world I live in this is a no go because of the cost. I
sure hope Microsoft fully exploits Exchange 2007 with a new Windows Mobile 7
when it arrives. Go head to head with RIM with features, security and
easily beat them on ease of use/setup because BPS is a pain to get set up
compared to FREE ActiveSync.

Hi Richard, thanks for the info.

Can you provide a link to the BPS/BES status?
