SBS2008 User Documents/Restore Question

SBS2008 Std

OK, by default I see where the Users share (and subsequent
FolderRedirections folder) on the SBS2008 is not accessible for security
reasons, even by an administrator. But what I can't figure out is how to
restore to a user folder. I am using the built in SBS2008 image backup and
I can start the restore wizard to restore a file that a user deleted from
their My Documents. When I drill down into right backup set and look for
the file all I see is the folder where it will be stored, but no contents.
I am assuming it's because of the same security issues I see when I try and
drill into that folder on the server drives.

How do I get to users files? How do I get to the same files in a backup so
I can restore a file from a backup? What is the SOP here?

Thanks!

-Richard K

Richard,

See my post in the sbs08 newsgroup, users can restore their own
documents by right clicking and selecting properties, previous versions
tab. For you to see them you have to take ownership of the folder as
administrator.

Tim, in this case I'm not looking for an updated document but a deleted
document. If I have no document to right click/properaties then how am I
supposed to previous versions? This still doesn't answer my question on how
do I restore user files from a backup if I can't see them?

SBS 2008 Backup - restore utility?
http://www.jlaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=9811434

I haven’t played with trying to access an SBS 2008 backup (on an external
USB drive) from Windows 7, but I note that in Disk Management | Action,
there is a menu item called "Attach VHD". This may be the easiest way to
browse an SBS backup file since these are in VHD format. For safety, I
would make a copy of the particular backup file rather than accessing it
directly on the USB drive.

Playing with backups late last night. Found this for viewing (and copying)
of files/folders from an Windows 2008 backup on a Windows 2008 Server
machine. Appears to work with SBS 2008.

Mounting backup file created by Windows 2008 Server
http://blogs.technet.com/11/archive/...08-server.aspx

To exit, unmount the snapshot and do this twice: type QUIT, then press the
ENTER key

Note: If you get an "access denied" error when trying to open a user's
folder in the snapshot, copying that user folder to the SBS 2008 server
desktop should allow you to view/copy the contents of the folder.

Merv, I followed the steps and mounted the right backup. When I try and
access the shortcut I get security errors. I then go to the
properties/security tab and make sure my user account is full rights and try
again but the same message. When I go back into security what I changed is
now rolled back. Bottom line... I can mount but I can't open the mount
because of security reasons. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Are you accessing with a domain admin account?

I have not had any luck trying to change the permissions or owners (access
denied or, as you mentioned, permissions rolled back).

The rest of the procedure seems to work for me. On this test server (SBS
2008 loaded into Hyper-V), I only have one partition and have set up another
VM HD that is used for the SBS backup.

When I do the "List All", I get 4 numbered lines:

1:
2:

3:
4:

If I mount 3: or 4:, I get an access error. If I mount 1: or 2:, I get
access to the C: Volume in the backup VHD. Not sure what 3:, 4: are.
Maybe System State (Active Directory) stuff.

Expose Snapshots Using Ntdsutil
----------------------
CMD Window

CD\

Ntdsutil
ENTER
snapshot
ENTER
list all
ENTER
mount 1 (for C: drive)
ENTER

For access to user folders.. copy the user folder to the SBS desktop
and then restore items to the appropriate user folder

unmount 1 (when finished)
quit
ENTER
quit
ENTER
----------------------------------
