Scan for non-critical updates loops

Whenever I scan for updates and no Critical Updates are found but 1 or more
"regular" Windows" updates are found, when I click on either the <Windows> or
<Driver Updates> links to display the list of updates to select for download
& install, an indentical "copy" of the original "parent" window ("Welcome to
Windows Update") gets inserted into the "action" section of the main browser
session window, prompting me to <Scan for updates> again. Clicking this "2nd"
scan link always results in a repeat this phenomenon recurring.

* I'm running Win2000 w/SP4 & IE 6 w/SP1.
* My View > Explorer > Discuss option is NOT checked

Any suggestions for how to fix this will be most appreciated!

Ben,

Check the Windows Update.log found in the WINNT directory for an
error code. The latest entries are at the bottom of the log.
Then go to the Troubleshooter page and look for that specific error
code that you located. Try the suggested resolution(s).

It may be a scipting , XML, or IE issue.

Thx much for the quick response, MVP! Unfortunately, Windows Update.log lists
NO error msgs => all entries for today report SUCCESS. Any other ideas?

Ben,

First try to reregister the XML files :

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=833766
" Note You may not have installed the files that are listed in steps
4 and 6 on your computer. If you do not have one of these files,
when you try to register the file, you will receive an error message
that is similar to the following error message:

LoadLibrary("filename.dll") failed - The specified file name could
not be found.

You can ignore this error message and go to the next step.

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and
then click Command Prompt.
2. In the Command Prompt window, type Regsvr32
C:\Windows\System32\Msxml.dll, and then press ENTER.
3. When you receive the following message, click OK:
DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\System32\Msxml.dll DLL succeeded.
4. Type Regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\Msxml2.dll, and then press ENTER.
5. When you receive the following message, click OK:
DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\System32\Msxml2.dll DLL succeeded.
6. Type Regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\Msxml3.dll, and then press ENTER.
7. When you receive the following message, click OK:
DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\System32\Msxml3.dll DLL succeeded.
8. Close the Command Prompt window. "

Go to Windows Update to see if that resolved the issue. If not,
close IE, empty the Temporary Internet Files via Internet Options in
the Control Panel . Install MSXML 3.0 SP4 :
http://msdn.microsoft.com/XML/XMLDownloads/default.aspx

Go to Windows Update to see if that resolved the issue. If not, close
IE, empty the Temporary Internet Files via Internet Options in the
Control Panel .

Install Windows Script 5.6
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Go to Windows Update to see if that resolved the issue. If not, close
IE, empty the Temporary Internet Files via Internet Options in the
Control Panel .

Boot to Safe Mode and run the Repair Tool for IE :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177

Go to Windows Update to see if that resolved the issue. If not ...
that's it, I'm out of ideas, Ben.
