Hi,
I have a flatbed scanner that I often use to make PDF's. Acrobat 8
allows you to create a PDF directly from a scanner. It opens a dialog
box that asks you to select your scanner. I'm using Vista business
edition. With User Account Control turned off, my scanner is listed as
an available option. When I turn UAC on and reboot, my scanner is not
listed as an option in the select dialog box. Any ideas how i can fix
this with out shutting off UAC?
thanks

We would need to know the scanner manufacturer and model and whether or not
the drivers installed are the most current. However, you can do a lot of
this yourself. You can check the manufacturer's website to see if you have
the latest drivers for your scanner. Second, when you do so, you need to
check to see if the drivers simply basic drivers or support all of your
scanner functions. Many manufacturers either supplied Vista with only
minimal drivers for legacy hardware and/or only supplied such drivers for
download at their websites. In such cases, you may need to purchase a new
Vista compatible scanner in order to have it function fully and properly in
Vista. If you go that route, you should check manufacturer websites for
Vista compatibility before you buy.

Thanks,
It's a Canoscan LIDE 30. It has the latest Vista drivers. Everything
works well with the Canon toolbar. Everything works great in Acrobat,
as lond as UAC is turned off. When turned on, the scaneer does not
appear in Acrobat. This looks like a permissions issue more than a
driver issue, although I am not an expert. The question is why some
hardware is not avialabel to acrobat with UAT turned on.

I'm not sure that I understand what you're saying, but I have a Canon
LIDE60 here, which is similar to yours. I have UAC turned on. I use
the CanoScan Toolbox 4.9 (which came with the scanner), one of the
choices is to create a pdf file. It works fine, and the pdf file is
correctly created.

Is this different from what you are describing?

Slightly. When I use the toolbar I can create a PDF . However, when
I try to create a pdf from the scanner, in Acrobat professional (the
full version, not the reader) I can only see the scanner if UAC is
turned off. Do you have Acrobat? Give it a try , thanks.

Sorry, no. I only have Adobe Reader here.

Thanks thought. It's not enough of an inconvenience that I would turn
off UAC (there, I said it, I like UAC, especially now that I am buying a
new laptop for my daughter to take to college). The work flow is a bit
smoother through Acrobat, but I'll adjust for now.
thanks

Just a thought, something else to check, maybe it's an issue with your
antivirus software. Try turning it off or otherwise disabling it to see if
you then can do as you wish. If not, then, it does sound as though UAC, for
some reason, is blocking the function on your setup.

Thanks. I tried it, no joy. It is so strange that UAC only blocks the
scanner in Acrobat, not the native Canon applications. I think I got a
genuine bug here.

This would indicate it is an issue between Acrobat and Vista and since it
works with the Canon bundled software, it would indicate the bug is in
Acrobat or possibly an issue between the Canon driver and Acrobat.
