Scanning for updates never completes...

This situation started a couple of weeks ago... now trying to fix. Windows
Update scan (scanning for updates) never completes. AU is set to notify

Does Automatic Updates say you have updates to install?

Scan for updates freezes or stops at 0%
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Also try temporarily disabling your third-party firewall.

Suggestion 1:-
Clearing Temporary Internet files, cookies and history in Internet Explorer
Tools>Internet Options>General
You’ll see Delete Cookies, Delete files, Delete History
NB: "Delete all offline content", will delete all files needed to browse the websites offline.
Reboot and try Windows Update again.

Suggestion 2:-

Suggestion 3:-
Make sure you haven’t got anything blocking Windows Update like Nortons, Zonealarm etc

Speedband etc.

Suggestion 4:
If still receiving the error, then reinstall the Windows Update Engine

No... the scanning process never stops! for example... 20 minutes (a test)
later and it was still 'checking for updates'... have disabled all
firewalls... no effect!

I've tried all four suggestions.... there is NO change. The log file
simply sends the initial 'checking' request to MS and that's the end of any
further log entries...... cleared everything, turned off everything.....
nothing!!! Last successful 'update' according to update history was October
2005 (didn't realize there were no updates for two months) John

(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Checking over everything yesterday, I realized that after downloading and
reinstalling the Windows Update engine, as you suggested, that the program
really didn't 're-install' the WU. It basically decompressed the files and
then recognized the WU already existed and then said it was finished. It did
not replace the old WU (same version, I believe). I could not find any entry
in the 'Control Panel' for the WU so that I could remove the existing one.

How do I manually remove the existing WU engine? thanks... John

Run the exe with the command line switch /wuforce, example:
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce

If that doesn't help, maybe register the MSXML3.dll
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If you get an error message : RegSvr32 LoadLibrary("MSMXL3.DLL") failed
- the specified module could not be found.

Download and install Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7)
