Scanning for updates

I've had to re-install Windows ME following a hard disk re-format. Checking
for updates led to download and install of SP1. So far so good, but now
when I check for any more updates - of which I'm sure there are many (see
below) - when I start "scan for updates" the system hands on "checking for
updates 0 percent". And there it stays.

Before installation of SP1 the scan worked OK and initial check showed some
25 critical updates available.

That should read "hangs" of course, not "hands". Typo.

Go ahead and download Dial-a-fix.
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Reboot into safe mºde (F-8)

Click the green checkmark and click Go.

After it has finished, try Windows Update and see if you can get your
updates installed.

Let us know what happens.

Hi,

Tried that, but still no joy. The alternative I guess would be to find all
these updates and install them manually. The problem is that I don't know
exactly where to look - I've spent what seems like hours looking around the
Microsoft update site(s), but can't locate what I need.

Any suggestions?

All is now well. I uninstalled AVG anti-virus programme, and it all burst
into life.

Thanks for your input -I've kept that Dial-a-fix routine on the PC; looks
like it could come in useful in the future. Thanks

Phil
