OS XP Pro. Internet - dial-up. Cable 20 mi away. DSL 20 miles away. How
do I schedule updates so they don't drive me crazy with little baloons
telling me my computer is in danger or if I have automatic update, it
downloads while I am trying to do other online activity driving the speed to
zero. Setting the schedule in the update window seems to do nothing. Faster
network not an option unless I put out the big bucks for a satalite system.

[It took 48 hours for your post to show up here.]

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Select the Notify Only option.

Thank you Pappa Bear for your input. However this does not solve my problem.
First, I live 20 miles from the nearest town with cable so I cant get cable
or a cable modem this far out. Same for the DSL line. ONLY reasonable
choice is dial up. Right now it’s running at 26.4 kbps. Right now that’s a
download rate of 891 bps. That is because automatic update is using the rest
to download the latest updates. If I set it to the recommended mode
(automatic), it is always downloading whenever I am connected to the
internet. I set the schedule but it ignores it. It looks like my only
option is to set the choice to download and install only when I tell it. It
would be so much better if the scheduler worked. Thank you for your help.

With Notify Only selected, you will have to approve which updates are
downloaded (approving the download will usually start the download process).
Once the installers have downloaded, you will then have to approve which
updates to install (approving the install will start the installation
process so be ready to reboot, if necessary).

[If the humongous KB951847 update is what's downloading, you *may* not need
it.]

PS: It's "PA Bear" (PA, as in Pennsylvania)

The scheduler, by design, controls when updates are *installed* rather than when
they are *downloaded*.

Harry.

If you are doing automatic downloads while you are online
you can still control them. Use right-click Suspend for one.
That's probably an easy equivalent to issuing a suspend
command using bitsadmin in a cmd window. At worst
you could stop and if necessary disable the BITS service
temporarily. The only problem you have then is being
responsible for undoing such blocks and managing them
appropriately.
