Screen goes dark

Very recently when i boot my laptop i have 1-2 seconds of normal brightness
but then the laptop screen darkens by 90%, and if I plug in a serparate
screen i get a perfect picture on that. No system files were changed
immediately before the darkening stated, but it was shut down improperly.
Also, if I hit the monitor switch button on the laptop then the problem is
resolved, but if i remove the external monitor it comes back again.
Can someone please help me resolve the issue as I am reduced to crying and
swearing and fear I will break something in frustration!

It should be under warranty; contact the manufacturer!

it isnt under warranty because i bought it at the start of the year.
