Screen image dissapears

I am running vista 64 bit on a Dell XP420 machine. I may be in the middle of
an Excel program or a chess game when the image completely dissapears. It
has dissapeared from the task manager and from the event viewer. How do I
resolve this instability ?

Download and install the latest updates from Dell:
