When I try to shut down with the Vista Power Button it will only select
sleep. In 'System Settings' the Power Button is selected to 'Shut Down'.
Whatever action is selected in System Settings the Power Button it will only
select Sleep.

Up to yesterday it worked ok and the on-screen power button shut down the
computer, I have uninstalled and re-installed a few programs since then.
What could I have done to change the Power Button action?

If Shut Down is selected from options menu (Start/Little Right Arrow) then
Shut Down is successful.

What has happened and how do I correct it??

Sorry I for got to say,... right click on the start button and then go to
Properties.
Then click on Classic start menu.
Then apply.
And then ok
This will put you back in the old windows.

open a command prompt and type the following

powercfg.cpl,1

press enter

or using the GUI the long way is:-

Control Panel \ Power Options \ Change Plan Settings \ Change Advanced Power
Settings

Once you get to this dialog, browse down to "Power buttons and lid"

From here, you can change the options:

a.. Power button action - Changes the hardware power button action
b.. Start menu power button - Changes the power button on the Start Menu
You can change the power button to either Sleep, Hibernate or Shut Down, or
even nothing for the hardware power button.
