screen vanishes

I am running 64 bit vista on an XP420. There are occasions when I am in the
middle of a task such as an excel worksheet that a mouse movement will cause
the screen to either dissapear or enlarge to maximum font sixe and
there-fore be off the screen. There is no warning message asking if I want
to exit or save the work. What causes this instabioity and how do I avoid

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

I have no idea what an "XP420" is. Some information about your computer
would be useful in enabling you to get focused help.

Some suggestions in the meantime:

1. Update the drivers for your video card. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

2. If updating the drivers doesn't work, your video card may be failing. If
this computer is a desktop, uninstall the video card and swap it out for a
known-working one that has Vista 64-bit drivers. If this is a laptop,
contact the laptop mftr.'s tech support.

sorry for the lack of info:my computer is a Dell desktop:with an intel core
2 processor:4GB of memory(800 mHz ): 8 GB cache and a 256 MB ATI radion
graphics card. I will follow your suggestion of reloading drivers but what
surprises me is that the programs were running fine initally and suddenly
developd this peculiar behavior. Another symptom is that the game of chess
had a feature called "mentor lines" showing experts next recommended moves
and this suddenly quit working.
