Is there a software that allows me to create a virtual desktop larger than
my monitor's resolution?
Some people called it scrolling desktop?

I have a nvidia GeForce FX5700 ultra and am running vista.

The reason for this is to capture higher resolution out put from mapping
software or website, which displays higher resolution map on higher
resolution desktop.

There certainly is. It's called Linux - and has had that capability for
several years.

Try GiMeSpace Desktop Extender, is solves this problem and gives you
even more.
It gives you a desktop with no size limitations and also lifts any size
restrictions on your window sizes.

wow, 200 to 400 some items on desktop still not enough?
I don't like work with that cluttered desktop esp. on work stations

I prefer toolbars, subfolders etc. subfolders in toolbars can be linked to
subfolders to anywhere including desktop. I tend to have more files and
subfolders in my documents than desktop esp. in network environment as this
reduces login in and log off time

furthermore, the desktop tends to be re-organized uncontrollably once in a
while, esp., in network environment and roaming connection

It is not about the space on your desktop but about space for keeping
many windows open next to each other at the same time. Specially on
little netbooks with screens of 800x600 or 1024x600 being able to expand
your space is very usefull, and some apps like to have windows of
1024x768 or even bigger like 1280x1024 etc. You can not do this on
netbooks, that's why expanding your desktop is usefull.
The space on my desktop for icons, docs etcs is not important for me. I
never put anything on my desktop.
