The last group of windows updates failed with the PC freezing at the 'Do not
switch off your computer... message.

Now the following error appears each time the laptop is started about 30
seconds ofter the desktop appears.

SVChost.exe application error
The instruction at “0x745f2780” referenced memory at “0x00000000”.
The memory could not be “read”.

After the error windows shuts down.

The laptop is a Dell. They are saying that windows update is attempting to
update dlls but is finding conflicts. As a result 7 dlls need to be
re-registered. They will tell us which dlls to fix but only if we pay them
for the information.

The error does not appear if the laptop is booted in safe mode.

Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

There are 2 fixes for this, one involves dealing with Microsoft and
should be a permanent fix. the other you can do yourself, but may
only be a temporary fix.

The temp fix is here

http://swigartconsulting.blogs.com/t...s_update_.html

This will work untill your next automatic update runs, then your
problem will be back and you will have to repeat this process.

The permanent fix is here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089/en-us

this will tell you about the problem and give you info on how to get a
hotfix from Microsoft. (they should not charge you)

I was able to find a link to the hotfix on line but cannot remember
where.

You receive an error message after a Windows XP-based computer runs an
automatic update, and you may be unable to run any programs after you close
the "svchost.exe - Application Error" error message dialog box:

Thanks John & Bear.

I had additional tried to find info about this on this site, but failed to
find anything due to the typo SCV instead of SVC. Once I realised I found
enough info to get the system back up and running.

I will review the links you have privided to see if I can fix it permanently.

Thanks again
