There's a temporary workaround for this issue.
Stop the AU service from either the services console or from the Run
command : Start > Run > type in
net stop wuauserv
Click Ok or press Enter
With show hidden files, folders, and systems files Enabled from within
Folder Options in the Control Panel, navigate to
WINDOWS\SofwareDistribution\Download and delete all contents of the
Download folder
Navigate to WINDOWS\SofwareDistribution\DataStore
Delete the DataStor.edb
Open the Logs folder in DataStore
Delete all of the logs [*** one can check the size of the logs to see if
any of them are over 128 KB or that there are too many of them present
first.
'too many' would be over 10, IMO. If the logs are not bloated or do not
exceed 10, then skip this step ***]
NOTE: Deleting DataStor.edb will *remove* the update history one sees on
either the Windows or Microsoft Update sites
Restart the AU service either from the services console or from
Start > Run > type in
net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
