Hi,

When I connect to the internet scvhost runs at 100% and brings my PC to a
grinding halt. I've done some research and found that the problem is down to
windows updates, when I turn this off all is well, until I try and manually
install the updates as soon as it starts scanning my PC scvhost just goes to
100% again, I have tried leaving it, but the screen doesn't change and stays
scanning for hours. I have managed to install KB927891 but this doesn't fix
the problem, can anyone HELP

Thanks

Svchost seems to take 50-90 MB of quite variable RAM allotments while at the
Update site. WTF?

Turn off automatic updates if svchost is jamming your computer when not at the
update site specifically.

A dial-up connection may be too limited to deal with this svchost problem when
obtaining updates, might need broadband if you can't get the download list. Even
a broadband connection can take 5-10 minutes to generate an update list while
svchost goes on at 80-100% CPU usage.

There's a temporary workaround for this issue.
Stop the AU service from either the services console or from the Run
command : Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv

Click Ok or press Enter

With show hidden files, folders, and systems files Enabled from within
Folder Options in the Control Panel, navigate to

WINDOWS\SofwareDistribution\Download and delete all contents of the
Download folder

Navigate to WINDOWS\SofwareDistribution\DataStore
Delete the DataStor.edb
Open the Logs folder in DataStore
Delete all of the logs [*** one can check the size of the logs to see if
any of them are over 128 KB or that there are too many of them present
first.
'too many' would be over 10, IMO. If the logs are not bloated or do not
exceed 10, then skip this step ***]

NOTE: Deleting DataStor.edb will *remove* the update history one sees on
either the Windows or Microsoft Update sites

Restart the AU service either from the services console or from
Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
