What's the trick to get Vista to search for files or folders when
you click the "search for files or folders" from the start menu?

Currently, it seems that I have to click the item, type a character
in the input box, wait for the navigation pane to show up, point
it to a drive and then type in the file name again as it was cleared.

There must be some way to have it NOT default to email messages
and web pages and such...

You use the Advanced Search feature by using the Windows-key/F-key
combination. You the check mark on *Include no-indexed and system files*,
and Vista's search will find anything you are looking for.

If I follow your directions and type autoexec.bat into the name field, it
finds
a result in some newsgroup file or something.
If I check the location and set it to my c drive, it works though. So
thanks.

I didn't think I needed to say choose your location to search. That should
be a given.
