Search Indexer stopped working

I have been getting the following error msg recently: "Microsoft windows
search indexer stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the
application to
stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available"
.. To date, windows have yet to be able to identify a solution. I spent a
VERY annoying 2 hours on the phone with Toshiba (where I can get tech support
w/o paying) and their answer was to reimage the hard drive to the out of box
state. If I wanted to do THAT, I would have done that without their "help."
Microsoft wants to charge me for tech support, since I have a non-retail
verison of vista that came with my computer (which is only slightly over one
month old!!!). I can't even turn the indexer off or choose to repair the
database from indexing options because the advanced tab is not available
because the indexer is not running - some catch 22, huh? Does anyone out
there have any input on this subject?
The following is the "problem signature" from Problem Reports and Solutions:

Please help if you can. Thanks

I am replying to my own post; this is more an addendum than a reply. I've
been on line looking around and at least I now know how to disable indexing
until the problem can be fixed: start management console - start
button/run/services.msc. Look for Windows search, highlight it and right
click for properties. In the general tab, about midway down, you'll see the
following "Path the executable:
C:\Windows\system32\searchindexer.exe/Embedding". There is a pulldown right
below to specify the startup type: make sure that the startup type is
"disabled".

Thanks in advance for anyone's help with the larger issue.

Hi Tom,

You might try "METHOD TWO" in the "To Restore or Reset Index Defaul
Settings : " section here. It may reset the Index for you.
