I'm at dir /xyz and i see file 123.log has contents "bullshit" in it.

From windows explorer, I type "bullshit" in the search bar and nothing
comes up, even though i JUST verified there is indeed a file in there
with that string.

Next, I verify dir /xyz is in search index.

Do I also have to verify .log extension is included in search?

Sweet Mother of God help me.

Press winkey plus the F key

Takes you to search window

Choose advanced search

You will see that the default is to search indexed locations

Is your file in an indexed location? If not, open Explorer and go to the
drive/folder where the file is located. Right click on the folder - choose
properties, then advanced. Put a check in the box for "index this folder for
faster searching".

It would probably be best to confirm that .log is indexed as I've just
checked mine and log is there and set to index contents but was switched
off doh!

turning off the windows search service does the trick, I can search
WHERE I want and find WHAT I want without worrying if its in index
location.

You didn't have to turn off indexing. All you had to do was use the Advanced
Search and tell the Search to *Included non indexed, hidden and system
files* and changed the Search location to point to the <C> drive or a folder
on the <C> drive.

If you have the Windows-key on the keyboard, then you can use the
Windows-key/F-key combination to go directly to Advanced Search.

Vista Indexing is not indexing the entire drive, which is only 3 default
locations out of the box.

1) Start-up
2) Off-line
3) Users

And the indexing is customizable where one can add or remove locations.

It would really be great if you would not continuously give out
mis-information, which seems to be your normal mode of operation.

well that's the key to this problem. I did have include non-indexed
files specified so I suspect .log wasn't in search files, but I don't
even know how to verify that.

Nature of my work has me searching files with random extensions or no
extensions often, so I think it's best for me to leave it off.

To adjust the search go to
CONTROL PANEL[/B
*SYSTEM AND MAINTENANCE
AND SELECT [B]INDEX PROPERTIE
the first tab shows where is indexed and can be used to fine tune wher
is indexed
if you select the advanced button and select files that will show fil
types, if indexed, plus level of indexing

Just tick the ones you want and the level of indexing require

The index service is very powerful when it is correctly configured. i
is the user's choice if the work involved in customising is worth th
time saved in the long ter

not for me to say how anyone uses -their -system but I feel an informe
choice is a better optio
