Searching in Vista

I'm having problems with Search in Vista.
I want to locate all files that have a certain extension, such as .pst. In
previous versions of Windows, this was simple, but not so in Vista.
Previously, all I had to do in Search was to search for *.pst to see a list
of all .pst files.
In Vista, what do I have to do to find all .pst files on my hard drive?

You'd need to have Outlook installed, in which case they get indexed by
mapi, otherwise it's an excluded extension by default.

If Vista search frustrates you, try Agent Ransack (free)...
http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/

Works well, despite not being listed for Vista. You may be pleasantly
surprised.

Control Panel | Systems and Maintenance | Indexing Options | Change how
Windows searches | Advanced | File Types [tab] | click pst to add to index.
Done.

Well, Jon, that the file type is excluded by default is true... but that one
must have Outlook installed is way, way, untrue. False. Bad advise.

The method you gave lower in the thread only indexes the name of the file,
which you can obviously do for any extension - and if you'd read the link
given then you would have seen that I was already aware of that, since I
gave that advice in the thread. If you want its contents indexed then you
need Outlook installed, or at the very least a suitable IFilter installed.

Dave Wood, who gave that response in the thread, is part of the Windows
Search team so I would suspect that he knows what he is talking about.

Not sure if you tried this but -- when you search for your *.pst, click on
'Advanced Search', and check the box labeled as 'Include non-indexed,
hidden, and system files (might be slow)'. This should yield your .pst
files.

Extst should work.
if it doesn't find them, then open the advanced options, and check "Include
non-indexed locations".
