My "All Programs" listing now has two "Windows Update" selections at the
top. The new one runs "muweb.dll" which Properties says is from Microsoft.
However, when I search Microsoft there is no information about this dll.

Has anyone seen this before?

Did you recently upgrade to Microsoft Update?

Upgrade to Microsoft Update. Automatically receive updates for Windows, Office
and more

I was having trouble with getting update to run some weeks ago (it would
tell me about the patches but I could not install them - this may have been
due to the switch from v5 to v6) and the Microsoft support folks sent me a
script. It might have done something like that, but I do not recall doing
it.

I'm just puzzled because I now have 2 separate "Windows Update" entries I
can click - one looks like a "Windows" provided icon while the other looks
like a typical shortcut. The "muweb.dll" is associated with the "unofficial"
icon.

I tried searching Microsoft website - but there seems to be no record of a
"muweb.dll" - so I am wondering if it is a "real" Microsoft update
operator - or some slime which snuck into my machine.

One should be "Microsoft Update" and one "Windows Update".

"Microsoft Update is the "new" version of Windows update which incorporates
updates for Windows and for MS Office applications.
originally they were separate and Office updates weren't included in the
Windows Updates which were for the OS only.

So the automatic updates will now download *all* security, and "critical"
updates for the Windows OS and Office (such as service packs etc).

Windows UPdate leads to the applet (accessible from Control Panel).
Micxrosoft Update icon on All Programs is just a link to the website.

Enlightenment strikes. Blasts cobwebs from brain. I see the light.

Though I am a little surprised, as I have no other Microsoft products
installed unless you count Freelancer.
