Windows XP(Home) SP3, OE6, IE8; Plenty of RAM & HHD space. Continuous checks
for Virus/Malware

1.4Ghz, VIA Technologies, Inc. 8 kilobyte primary memory cache, 256 kilobyte
secondary memory cache, P4X266-8233, Enclosure Type: Desktop V2 Premier,
Windows XP (Home) SP3, 2 External USB 500/1TB Hard Drives (NTFS), 1.5 GB
Ram, Upgraded PSU, Belarc Advisor, Multimedia - lists, MPU-401 Compatible
MIDI Device - Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller - Standard
Game Port. Circuit Board: P4X266-8233, Bus Clock: 100 megahertz, BIOS: Award
Software International, Inc. 6.00 PG 09/05/2001, Virus/Malware Protection -
Windows Live One Care, MS Windows Malicious SW Removal Tool, ThreatFire,
SUPERAntiSpyware, HiJackThis, Malwarebyte Anti-Malware, Registry Mechanic
8.0.0.900, CCleaner.

Hi, when accessing secure web sites(Bank, Credit Union, etc.) I can no
longer find the secure emblem(lock) being displayed. The URL does begin
with "https:" but nowhere on the web page for the site, can I find the lock
emblem (IE-8). Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the lock
emblem to display? In "FireFox" the lock does display in the bottom right
corner.

Thanks for any help

TIA

When all else fails, RTFM. See IE8 Help | How to know if an online
transaction is secure?

On IE8, from what I've seen, if you log into a secure site, the address bar
(where the URL is displayed) turns green or another color and on the right
part of the address bar, should be a lock with the name of the certificate.
This doesn't happen for you?

Thanks for the Reply. No, none of that happens. Below is a site in
question. I even tried starting IE-8 with no add-ons and there was no
difference. If nothing else maybe I'll just remove and re-install IE-8.
I'll have to check to see if I install it after SP3.

http://www.andrewsfcu.org/ (Home Page-not a secure page) No "Https:" until
I log in.

Do you access this page via a bookmark/favourite?

All I did was to ADD the http"s" in the address bar and the Home page became
a secure page.

Delete your shortcut, type address with https and then resave as shortcut
when page displays..

Should have pointed out in my other post that the link you give starts with
http NOT https, so it wouldn't direct to a secure page in the first place.

The address bar will only turn green if the site uses an EV (Extended
Validation) SSL certificate, which for many companies are prohibitively
expensive, and tend to only be used by very large companies and banks. For
non-EV SSL certificates you still get the lock appear in the right of the
address bar though; just because the address bar is not green does mean the
site is not secure.

Some don't even bother with EVs. I bank online with Barclays and the site
just shows the https padlock. I know MS updates sometimes includes an
updated list of EV certificates which presumably adds the green address
attribute.

Barclays may have changed their policy by now but wont know until the next
update. Interesting that such a big organisation didn't take up the option
initially, they can certainly afford it. Apart from the colour change, is
there any further security benefit?

Seems it gives a bit more info about who validated the site. Although
viewing the info by clicking on the padlock does the same.:

EVs don't need an update from MS, unless it's for a new root certificate.
The EV cert itself has the necessary flags required to cause IE to show the
green bar.

Just looking at renewing an SSL certificate today for a site I run, and
there's a premium of just over £300 for an EV cert from Verisign (£196 for a
Secure Site cert, £525 for a Secure Site + EV). That's a lot of money to
turn a green bar on (all the other features of the cert are identical,
including the company verification, it's just that you pay £300+ for an
extra couple of flags in the certificate data. Looks like I'll be sticking
to Geotrust or Comodo again :P
