Secure Webdav XP client works, Vista doesn't

Hello,

I run Vista Ultimate. IE8. Our sysadm has a remote Win2003 server set up
using webdav and a cert for a secure connection. On XP I enter
https://xxxx.yyyy.org/FTP into IE, enter my credentials and I get to the
server. Then in IE I go to File and Open, open as web folder and it works as
a web folder.

On my Vista box I get to the same place by Map a Network Drive, Connect to a
website that you can use... etc. This too gives me a web folder on my Vista
box.

That is where the similarity ends. On my XP box if I double click on an
..xls file, the workstation opens the file in Excel. On my Vista box if I
double click on the same .xls file, the behavior is different. My Vista box
opens a File Download dialog. It shows the name of the file and states that
the file is Compressed (zipped) and it asks me if I want to Open or Save the
file? If I select Open another dialog opens that states Do you want to save
this file? There is a warning at the bottom: The file you are downloading
cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an
incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you
cancel the download?

Wth? I just want to have the mapped file feel like it is local. Note that
when the sysadm has the server set up without the Cert it works fine. Add
the Cert and I get this weirdo behavior, but only on the Vista box. Is it
Vista? Is it an IE8 thing?

Please help! We've been screwing around with this for too long...

In case anybody else out there has a similar problem. After working for 9
hours with MS Tech support level 2...

- Export the Certificates from the server
- Import the server certificates onto the Vista box at the root level
- Apply hotfix KB971736
- Apply hotfix KB977262
- Reboot machine

Viola! Vista box now works fine. Apparently Vista is a lot more picky
about security than the XP box.
