I recently had a number of strange events. My home network could no longer
see one of the PCs. The affected PC could no longer see the other computers,
nor a dedicated network drive, but could access the internet but with
limitations. It could no longer upload to my web site using Front Page
"publish." In troubleshooting the problem, I removed the NIC from the
System, rebooted, and attempted to re-install it. While Windows recognized
and installed drivers, etc, the installation itself failed. I checked the
Event Viewer log and Dr Watson. The attempted installation was reporting a
DCOM failure on the Event Viewer. There were also were some Warning reports
regarding the identity of the PC. The PC was identified correctly; the
Workgroup information was correct. I happen to check the Windows Security
Center and discovered that all three of its settings were locked. For
example, I could not turn the Firewall OFF. I could not turn Automatic
Updates OFF. I had no options. After checking and rechecking, my only
recourse was to Restore back to an earlier point, which was successful and
corrected the problem all the problem indications. In reading similar posts
here, I suspect the cause was related to SP2 secuirty upgrades.
