Hi Lem, he first message 0x80070005 is a permissions error.
The 2nd problem is the 'update/update.exe is not a valid Win32 application' which suggests
that possibly the download is corrupt or it's sitting on a bad section of the hard drive -
not that the hard drive is bad but it could mean that the hard drive needs to be checked
etc. Once you've done some maintenance, download the full file for SP3 and install, also
note I've included some articles for your perusal.
1. For the 0x80070005 -
First, make sure that your anti virus software isn't locking the registry and preventing
the installer from modifying the same.

| Hi. I can't find the thread, but back in April I got help here with security
| updates failing. It involved copy/pasting a set of instructions which changed
| permissions. It solved the problem then though I noticed on running it that
| while something like 16000 changes had been made, it said it failed on 8.
|
| On 13th May however, Security Update for Windows XP (KB950749) failed, and
| has repeatedly failed and trying to update to service pack 3 has now failed.
|
| In addition to the 0x80070005 error message, I got 'update/update.exe is not
| a valid Win32 application'
|
| I'm currently on Windows XP service pack 2 Home edition.
|
| Can anyone help?
