Security Update Disables DiskDefragmenter

Yesterday I downloaded security updates for XP Pro, Service Pack 1.

Now when I try to run Disk Defragmenter, I get the error message that
"Chkdsk is scheduled to run on...C:\ Please run Chckdsk /f."

When I try to run Checkdsk, I get the message, "The type of file system is
NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in
use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked
the next time the system restarts?"

Whether I type "Y" or "N" doesn't matter. Chckdsk won't run.

In Task Manager the only Process running is System Idle. The only
application running is Lotus Smart Center (office app.)

Is there a workaround for this, so that I can run Disk Defragmenter?

Thanks for replying.

I can run chkdsk from Start/Run, but it runs in read only mode, and when I
try to degrag, I still get the message to run Chkdsk /f. When I try to do
that, and if I choose "Y" re running chkdsk /f on reboot, chkdsk doesn't run
when I reboot and I still get the same error message when I go to Disk Defrag.

Did you try CHKDSK /F /R?

Jan,

Just did try chkdsk /f /r. Got same messsage: chkdsk cannot lock the volume,
because another process is running.

But when I open Task Manager, the only process running is System Idle!

Hello David,

This message is quite normal for e.g. the system drive or the drive that
holds the pagefile or systemtempdir. Normally after this question there will
be asked if you would like to lock the volume anyway by closing all open
entries or if you would like to run CHKDSK the next time you reboot the PC.
Always choose the latter option and reboot.

I am having the same problem, I cannot run the disk defrag and get ths same
message. Did you find a solution to this problem?
