If I run Security Update for Windows XP (KB893066) am I at risk of
screwing up my XP Home SP1 system please? Following the various links
to get more details, I read a lot of stuff I don't understand, like
this:

"On computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack
1 (SP1), networking programs and tools that send manually crafted
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) packets over raw Internet Protocol
(IP) sockets may stop working. This behavior may also affect programs
and tools that send User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets. Network
connectivity between clients and servers may not work after the
installation of security update MS05-019 or Windows Server 2003
Service Pack 1"

While it's largely gobbledegook to me, I also would like to plug any
security loopholes, so I'd apprecaite practical advice please.

FWIW, I use Firefox as my default browser.

Just tonight installed all the recent updates including 893066...
tested lots of stuff, including ftp transfer... access to all disks...
etc...

Can't find any problems on my WinXPPro SP2 Dell...

KB893066 was a bit of a disaster for me, in that when I was at home
connecting to the internet via W98 ICS, it stopped my XP SP2 Notebook from
loading some web sites, while others worked fine. At work, connecting via my
corporate network, the exact same computer with the security patch installed
worked perfectly!

Microsoft recommended a registry hack to change the MTU to 576, after which
my computer works fine both at work and at home. I do hope a proper fix is
released soon, but in the meantime, I am happy leaving the patch installed.

I am not an expert, but this update is directed to eliminating access to
"raw sockets". There is a discussion of this on www.dslreports.com, in
which one poster stated that the only people who are concerned about
needing access to raw sockets are those running "security scans" of
computers, i.e., hackers.
