I am using Windows xp and at the end of the installation I get a failure.
Looking at the update history does not give me a problem when I click on the
failure icon. It's been trying to update for two weeks. I have tried both the
automatic and manual update. I think I blocked a website with a WGT in it at
the end of the installation that may be the cause but I don't know how to
unblock it now.

Right click on the internet explorer Icon (blue e), click the privacy tab,
then click the sites button, then highlight the website in question then
click "remove".

The failure to get an error code when you click on the "Failed" icon tells
me that you are running a third-party security application that blocks
popups. Please disable all third-party anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall,
etc, products before running Windows Update. (Enable Windows Firewall to
replace any disabled third-party firewalls). Now you should be able to
click on the "Failed" icon and get some information, in the form of an
8-character hexadecimal failure code.

Thanks Sandy and Robin,
I looked at the files I blocked and the one I expected to find was not there
so that mustn't be the problem. Then I changed my pop up settings and found
the error code: 0x8024200d. I went to help and it wasn't noted in any of the
answers. I then tried to search on the error and nothing could be found. What
do you suggest next?
You've been a great help so far!

This was reported once before on 27 June 2006 by fantasy_viper who also
suffered error 8024200d on update 914389, but he never posted the final
resolution. Could you post the relevant section (only) of the file:

C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log

which should show the error occurring for this update. Could you also check
for the existence of C:\WINDOWS\KB914389.log and post it if it exists.

The error code suggests that the download was corrupt, or improperly
truncated. You might need to:
1. Empty all Temporary Internet Files in control panel Internet Options;
2. Delete the contents of the folder:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

and then try the update again.

I have deleted the temporary internet files, and the C:\windows\KB914389.log
file is empty. It the Windows \softwaredistribution\dowload\ folder there
are:

07fc28da31fb67510471389F08bbe93
c268348752498f57ff1128aeba23c4f1
S-1-5-18

Should I delete all those and their contents?

That is what I suggested:

I cannot delete S-1-5-18 as the "directory is not empty". I tried deleting
the individual contents and get the same message. I attempted to install the
update with this folder " as is" and it failed again.

What is it that you were attempting to do? As far as I am aware, you don't
get those messages from Windows.

Just open:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

and drag the entire contents to the Waste Basket. Then restart Windows.

When I move the flolder to "recycle" I get the message in a window,"cannot
remove folder sp2gfe: the directory is not empty". I moved all other folders
to "recycle" and tried to download the update again. This time I went to the
windows update webpage and there were 10 updates to install. All installed
properly expected the KB914389 failed again. I will check to see if the
error message is any different than before.
