Security Update KB971486 is trying to install over and over

Hi,

For the record I am using a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor
3300+, 2411MHz/1.93
GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home, SP3., with IE8.

This morning I downloaded and installed all the monthly Security Updates
released
from Microsoft.

About an hour later I noticed I had another update notification in my
taskbar so
I installed it too. Then I discovered it was one I had already downloaded
and installed
(KB971486) earlier in the morning.

Even now, about six hours later, I still have a notification in my taskbar
that I
have an Update ready to install and it is still the same one I have already
installed
twice today.

I tried submitting this same question to the Microsoft Windows XP (General)
forum this morning
but when checking the site about 30 minutes ago I discovered my question
hadn't
even been posted and I noticed there were no other posts for today either
which is
strange in itself.

Regardless, is any one else experiencing this problem or have any idea what
is the
problem?

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

UPDATE: I submitted this question yesterday on the Win XP General Question
forum too and then discovered it hadn't appeared so I decided to try this
forum and now today I discover both of them appeared. Sorry for any
confusion this might have caused

Hi Ǝиçεl,

Thanks for the suggestion but when I couldn't post here yesterday for one
reason or another I went to 'Annoyances' and posted this same question.
Someone there recommended I try that solution too.

So, this morning I tried what you suggested step by step with no positive
results. So I am still stuck with my computer telling me the update is
installed while 'Secunia PSI' says it is not.

I see a few other people have posted on the Secunia PSI forum having the
same problem as me with the same update so at least someone else is sharing
my pain.

What I am really trying to find out at this point is if I am safe or not
until this gets figured out?

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever (Phil)

Check the KB971486.log, located in WINDOWS, to see what is interfering
with the update's installation.
Or, clean boot XP and see if that gets the automatically downloaded
update to install properly:
How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

When the kernel is replaced, as it is from this update, security
software may interfere with the operation.

I am having the same problem. When I checked the error message in the log it
says "17.219: KB971486 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct." How can I correct this?

Morning DM,

I share your pain. I am still lookingm for the fix too.

I would appreciate it if you could tell me how I find the log you are
referring to, then I can check mine and see if it has something similar to
yours. When I select to show hidden files I see KB471486 is listed as
installed but I have yet to find this log you are talking about.

I have to do some running with my mother (87 years old) right now but I will
check back in when I get back this afternoon.

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Go to START, click RUN and then %Windir%\KB971486.log.

I found a solution on another website that worked for me:

Step 1: Remove KB971486 in Add or Remove Programs
========================================
1. Click "Start", click "Run", type: appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then
click "OK".

Note: Be sure to have "Show updates" checked (if Service Pack 2 for XP is
installed).

2. Look for updates KB971486.
3. Please highlight and remove it.
4. Restart Windows as required.

Step 2: Reinstall KB971486
====================
1. Please download the file from the following link:

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...86-x86-ENU.exe

2. Save the update to C: drive. (Do not run the update directly)
3. Click Start->Run, type: "C:\WindowsXP-KB971486-x86-ENU.exe /overwriteoem"
(without quotations) and then press Enter to install the update.

There is a space between "C:\WindowsXP-KB971486-x86-ENU.exe" and
"/overwriteoem”.

After this, restart the computer and then try to visit the Windows Update
site to check if the Update KB971486 is still listed.
