i periodically monitor and service 30+ public computers at a library all
running windows 2000. they all update automatically. on one of the
machines, i have this same problem with the failure of this particular update
to install. i checked the update history on the machine, and it's been
"cancelling" the installation of this file every day for three weeks or so.
(the history page notes this file as a component of service pack 3.) when i
went to the microsoft download page for updates and tried to install it
manually, i received an error message that the version of windows on the
machine doesn't take this particular update. since it's a service pack 4
version on the machine and this update is a service pack 3, i should think it
would take it. and if it doesn't take it, then why does it keep appearing in
the automatic updates and then informing me that it is failing to install? i
checked a couple of the other machines, and this particular update has
installed successfully on them.
