Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework Fails

I receive the following error when I attempt to install the update.

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB886903)

XP Pro, Service Pack 2, 640 MB RAM

I encountered the exact same problem about a month ago. I still haven't got a
solution ... I was hoping to find one on this board. I'll keep looking
through the 362 pages of posts. If anyone has solved this problem please
reply to this thread or point us to another thread that has information.

What is the error you receive. Is an error code given? If so please post it
here.

I am also encountering the same exact problem with .net framework version 1.1
service pack 1. Also I get the same failed problem when I try to update
security update (KB888113)

It is a window that opens titled 'Automatic Updates'. In it is the following:
Updates were unable to be successfully installed.
The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB886903)

When I attempt to do it manually by going to the Windows Update website, not
only does the above update fail but the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service
Pack 3, English Version also fails. The only difference between the two
methods is that the manual one lists both items failing.

In going to View Installation History and clicking on the 'Failure' Status, I
get the following:

Error Code: 66A Try to install the update again, or request help from one of
the following resources. Windows Update Response Center, Windows Update
Troubleshooter, Windows Update Newsgroups. For assisted support options:
Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

Ron:
Run a search for "KB886903" in "Windows Update General". It yielded several
workarounds for the problem. It looks like there is an error in the security
update to .net which not only causes problems in some installs but also
creates issues for developers after they successfully install the update. I
may elect to "do nothing" until Microsoft gets a real working fix released.
