Please bear with me as I'm not very technical. I've read up about the issues
with the update and have downloaded the most current update from MS, however,
it still doesn't resolve my main problem of my printer not printing. It
keeps telling me that my USB device is not recognized and when I try to
update the driver for it, it doesn't work. I'm running Win XP SP2. Does
anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Try removing update 908531 and see if the printer works ok.
See http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=19125

There there's a section on removing this update.
I'm "presuming" (which is bad to do, really) that (a) you have this update, & (b) it was gotten before the 25th.

Hello Maurice,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I tried removing the update (and yes I had it from the 16th) and this did
not fix my printer problem. I uninstalled HP's Share to Web application and
this did not fix the problem either. Prior to trying these two things, I
downloaded the .vbs file from Fix (Line 383, Right) - Courtesy of Kelly and
this also did not resolve my issue. Prior to all of the above, I tried to do
a system restore and that also didn't do anything.

I've changed my automatic update settings to notify me first, so now that
I've removed the KB908531 update, it's prompting me to re-download it.
Should I do this since removing it did not fix my printer problem?

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you so much!

Jessy

Try Control Panel / Printers and Fax / Find your printer listed / Right
Click and Delete
Then reboot and reinstall the printer if it does not load back by it self.

Good Luck I think this will work for you .

Hi Jim,

I deleted the printer and tried reinstalling it, but now I can't even get it
to appear in the printers list because it won't go past the point of the
install where it's searching for drivers. It keeps on telling me that the
"USB Device is Not Recognized" and the 'Device Status' box says that "No
drivers are installed for this device". There is a Microsoft Driver from
2001 installed, but when I click on 'Driver Details' it says that "No driver
files are required or have been loaded for this device". I tried updating
the driver and searching my computer for it, but it says it doesn't find
anything. This for sure is a problem with the security update because prior
to it I didn't have any problems with this printer, so I don't know what else
to do because as it is right now, I don't even have that update on my
computer - I'm being prompted to redownload it, but I don't know if I should
- maybe it would be okay though since removing it didn't resolve my
issue...what would you recommend?

Thanks!

If your install of 908531 dates from 16 Apr-06, I suggest that you try the
revised version (25 Apr-06) being pushed by Automatic Updates. If no joy,
it, too, may be uninstalled.

Hello,

My 908531 update was from April 16, and I also downloaded the revised
version from April 25th. The revised version didn't fix my problem and so I
tried uninstalling the original version (but have left the April 25th version
on my computer). I am now being prompted to re-download the April 16th
version every time I turn the computer on. Should I re-download it since
deleting it didn't fix my problem, or do you think I should try uninstalling
the April 25th version also first just to see if that does anything? I sort
of doubt it'll do much, and at this point, I've uninstalled my printer and
can't reinstall it cause for some reason it doesn't detect the drivers
included with my original CD (or even with the most currently downloaded HP
drivers - although they are a few years old since HP no longer provides
support for this particular printer). I'm at a loss and am wondering if it
would just be easier to purchase a new printer...although if I was to get
another HP printer, would I just have the same problem??

Sorry to babble on like this, but I'm really at a loss of what to do next...

Only the revised (April 25th) version is being offered by
Automatic/Windows/Microsoft Update now, Jessy. If Automatic Updates offered
you the revised version, it should be the only one installed (i.e., the new
one would have replaced the old one).

Go to Add/Remove Programs > Make sure the 'Show Updates' box is checked >
Scroll down: If you find "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)" listed,
uninstall it and reboot the machine, then (re)install 908531 offered by
Automatic/Windows/Microsoft Update and see how things are.

Okay, I've installed the latest update, and now it appears as being installed
today only. I tried automatically detecting my plug and play printer to
reinstall it (again), but it doesn't find it (even though it's turned on and
everything is plugged in).

I don't understand why the latest security update doesn't fix this problem...

Maurice and I were only guessing (kinda) that the update might be causing
your problem. If you uninstall the new version via Add/Remove Programs,
does the printer problem go away? If not...

After having uninstalled the new version, if you use System Restore and
choose a Restore Point pre-dating the install of ANY recent updates (one
prior to 16 Apr-06, according to your posts here), does the printer problem
go away?

Have you contacted HP Support about the problem?
