Every time I turn on my computer, the little update thing is there waiting
for me to click it. I do, it tries, and it fails...again. This is many many
times, I tried seeking help in their "solutions" area only to find 0 hits to
my query. Halp!

This worked for me.

I am sorry I do not know the original poster:

Download the "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool", Run it, and use the spin box to remove
Microsoft .NET
Framework 2.0. Leave version 1 alone. After it uninstalls and reboots, go
to Windows Update
and it will show that Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 needs to be installed.
After that, the
update for it (KB917283) will install correctly. Another pain in the ass
from Microsoft. You
would think the error message would TELL you that 2.0 is not working
right...

I too had that issue, except mine kept saying it had installed successfully,
but then would tell me three minutes later I needed to install again. I
found a post a few days back by a ChristoperM, who said he resolved a similar
problem by uninstalling .Net Framework V.2.0, reinstalling it from the
Windows Download section (I used the x86 one), and then running Windows
Update after restarting the computer. I tried it, it installed, I restarted
the computer, and voila, no problems.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, after posting this I thought to scroll down and see if I was the
only one with this problem. Lo and behold, I wasn't. I found the link
mentioned and after one update install error and a bunch of reboots I think
I'm good. Thanks everyone!

I don't know which of the suggestions worked, but it's good to know both of
you solved the problem.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers,

Zee

Ok thanks. I uninstalled from add/remove programs, booted, went to updates,
downloaded version 2.0 (I'm glad you said you used the x86 one) and held my
breath, and it worked!

After reinstaling .NET Framework version 2.0 you must visit
Windows/Microsoft Update again to install the patch.

What if you can't find the uninstall for ".Net Framework V.2.0"?
Can I just re-install on top, with out uninstalling?

Download

Run it, and use the spin box to remove Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

Leave version 1 alone. After it uninstalls and reboots, go to Windows
Update.
